HARRY'S 'DIANA FILM' CLAIM ERUPTS — AS WILLIAM'S 'WE WON'T DO THIS AGAIN' VOW REOPENS THEIR DEEPEST RIFT

Prince Harry is reportedly approaching people who knew Princess Diana about a television film ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death. Neither Harry nor Netflix has confirmed the project, and a film crew seen at Althorp has not been linked to him — but Prince William's own public words from 2017 and 2021 make the potential collision very real.

LONDON — Twenty-nine years after Princess Diana's death, the fight over who gets to tell her story may be moving back to the center of the feud between her sons.

Royal commentator Richard Kay has claimed Prince Harry is reaching out to Diana's friends and other people who knew her as he considers a television film about his mother ahead of the 30th anniversary in August 2027. Harry's representatives have not publicly confirmed such a project, and Netflix has not announced one.

What makes the report combustible is not simply Diana's name. It is the documented history behind it: in 2017 William described the brothers' joint documentary as a one-off and said, 'We will not be doing this again.' Four years later, after the Dyson investigation into the BBC's Panorama interview, he said that programme should never be aired again. Then in 2022 Harry and Meghan's Netflix series used Panorama footage anyway.

THE DIANA FILM CLAIM LANDS — BUT THE CONTRACT IS STILL MISSING

The current story begins with a report, not an announcement. Kay said on the Daily Mail's Palace Confidential programme that one reason Harry is back in Britain is to make his own television film about Diana, and that the duke has been contacting friends and others from her circle to ask them to contribute.

That is a serious claim because of who Kay is and because he knew Diana personally. It has also been repeated across multiple outlets. But the evidentiary line matters: no title has been announced, no director or production company has been named, no release date has been confirmed and neither Archewell nor Netflix has placed a Diana film on a public slate.

The same caution applies to the most intriguing supporting detail. Darren McGrady, the former royal chef who worked for Diana, wrote after the report appeared that he had seen a film crew at Althorp, the Spencer family estate where Diana is buried. He wondered whether that was connected to the story. That observation shows a crew was there; it does not prove the crew belonged to Harry's project.

WILLIAM'S 2017 LINE IS REAL: 'WE WILL NOT BE DOING THIS AGAIN'

The strongest part of the 'broken pact' narrative is not a secret briefing. It is William's own voice.

In July 2017, William and Harry appeared together in Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, an ITV and HBO documentary marking 20 years since Diana's death. The film was deliberately personal: the brothers looked through family photographs, remembered their mother's humor and discussed the final phone call they had with her.

Before the programme aired, William explained why they had agreed to speak so openly. ITV recorded him saying the timing felt right, that the film was intended as a tribute from Diana's sons — and that they would not do it again. He also said they did not expect to speak as openly or publicly about her again.

Harry was beside him in the broader project and participated fully in that commemoration. But no public document has emerged showing the brothers signed, wrote or formally recorded a binding agreement never to make another major Diana project. The word 'pact' is therefore an interpretation of their shared 2017 stance, not a verified contract.

THE DETAIL THAT COMPLICATES THE 'BROKEN PACT' STORY: WILLIAM CANNOT VETO A PRIVATE FILM

That distinction changes the legal and practical picture. William can object. He can decline to participate. He can ask that certain material not be used. But there is no public evidence that he holds a veto over every future film Harry might make about their mother.

The Palace's September 7 guidance actually makes the separation clearer. King Charles formally restated that Harry and Meghan are non-working royals whose charitable and commercial activities are undertaken in a private capacity. That boundary limits their ability to present private projects as Crown business; it does not forbid them from making commercial television.

So if a Diana film becomes real, the central conflict would not be 'Can William stop it?' The sharper question is what Harry chooses to include — and whether those choices reopen subjects William has explicitly asked the media world to leave alone.

HARRY HAS ALREADY CROSSED ONE DIANA LINE ON NETFLIX

In May 2021, retired judge Lord Dyson published his investigation into how BBC reporter Martin Bashir secured Diana's 1995 Panorama interview. The report found Bashir used deceit, including fake bank statements shown to Earl Spencer, and criticized the BBC's handling of the affair.

William's response was unusually personal. He said the way the interview was obtained had influenced what Diana said, worsened his parents' relationship and contributed to the fear, paranoia and isolation he remembered from her final years. His conclusion was unambiguous: in his view the Panorama programme had no legitimacy and should never be aired again.

And the brothers have already collided over this exact boundary once. In December 2022, the first episode of Harry & Meghan on Netflix included excerpts from Diana's Panorama interview despite William's public request. Harry acknowledged that his mother had been deceived into giving the interview while saying she was speaking from her own lived experience.

NETFLIX HAS FIRST LOOK — NOT A CONFIRMED DIANA COMMISSION

In August 2025, Archewell Productions and Netflix replaced the couple's original exclusive-style output relationship with a multi-year first-look deal. Under that structure Netflix gets the first opportunity to consider Archewell film and television projects. It is not an automatic commitment to finance everything the company develops.

Netflix's own announcement named projects including Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, a second season and holiday special connected to With Love, Meghan, and other development work. It did not announce a Princess Diana documentary. Reports in 2025 nevertheless said a Diana project was being discussed as a possibility for the 2027 anniversary.

There is an obvious commercial reason such an idea attracts speculation: Harry & Meghan was a major audience success for Netflix, drawing 23.4 million views in its first four days according to the streamer. Diana also remains one of the most enduring subjects in royal publishing and documentary television.

But commercial logic is not evidence of Harry's motive. Until there is a commission, budget, production credit or announcement, claims that he is making the film primarily for a payday remain commentary rather than established fact.

ALTHORP AND EARL SPENCER TURN THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY INTO A CROWDED FIELD

The timing becomes even more complicated because Harry would not be the only member of Diana's family telling her story ahead of 2027.

Earl Charles Spencer's Swan Song: Diana, My Sister is scheduled for publication on September 22, 2026. Penguin describes it as Diana's life and death told from her brother's perspective, including their childhood, her marriage, her public work and the week she died.

That book is confirmed. The reported Harry film is not. Yet the two stories are already being pulled together because Harry remains close to the Spencer side of the family and spent time at Althorp with Meghan and their children earlier this year.

What is certain is that the 30th anniversary will produce a wave of new Diana material. For William, who has repeatedly emphasized protecting his mother's memory, that means the pressure is likely to rise whether Harry makes a film or not.

WILLIAM'S SILENCE MAY BE THE STRONGEST RESPONSE AVAILABLE

Current reporting still describes William and Harry as estranged, with no sign that the Sussex family's return to Britain has repaired the brothers' relationship. William has also shown little appetite for answering each new Sussex story publicly.

That makes a direct statement about the rumored film unlikely unless a concrete production crosses a line he has already defined — particularly the reuse of Panorama material or claims he believes distort their mother's final years.

The important point is that William does not need to argue that Harry has no right to speak about Diana. Both men are her sons. Both have built parts of their public lives around causes she championed. The conflict is over method: how often to revisit her story, what material can be used, and when remembrance becomes commercial content.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: THE PROJECT HAS TO BECOME REAL BEFORE THE FEUD DOES

First, does Archewell or Netflix formally announce a Diana film? Second, do any of Diana's friends confirm on the record that Harry approached them to participate? Third, does a production become publicly linked to the film crew seen at Althorp? And fourth, if a film appears, does it use or reconstruct the Panorama interview William said should never be aired again?

Until one of those things happens, the strongest version of the story remains a reported plan surrounded by unusually suggestive circumstances — not a finished Netflix documentary and not proof that Harry has deliberately set out to defy his brother.

But the historical fault line is already there. William said in 2017 that the brothers would not repeat that level of public disclosure about Diana. In 2021 he condemned the commercialization of the Panorama narrative. In 2022 Harry's Netflix series used the interview anyway. Now, in 2026, a new report says Harry may be preparing to return to Diana's story once more.

If the project is confirmed, the argument will not begin on premiere night. It began years ago — in two brothers' very different answers to the same impossible question: how do you protect the memory of the most famous woman in the world when the world will never stop asking for more?
