NORWAY'S ROYALS ROCKED BY SECOND DEATH: Princess Astrid Dies Just TWO DAYS After King Harald's Funeral!

The 94-year-old princess died peacefully on September 11, only 48 hours after attending the funeral of her younger brother, King Harald V — plunging Norway's royal family into a second wave of mourning.

OSLO — Norway's royal family has been struck by another devastating loss. Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner, died peacefully on Friday, September 11, at the age of 94 — just two days after she joined the family to say goodbye to her younger brother, King Harald V.

The timing made the announcement especially painful. Astrid had only just attended Harald's funeral ceremonies in Oslo, and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre later noted that she was present both at Oslo Cathedral and at the Palace Chapel. Forty-eight hours later, the Royal House announced that she too was gone.

A Final Goodbye — Then Another Royal Loss

King Haakon VIII said his aunt had represented the Royal House with warmth, loyalty and duty throughout a remarkably long public life. He described her as an important source of support to King Harald and the wider family, adding that she was never afraid to speak her mind.

The Palace ordered the flag above the Royal Palace balcony to be lowered to half-mast on the day of her death and again on the day of her funeral. Government buildings across Norway also lowered their flags in tribute.

The Princess Who Became Norway's First Lady at 22

Astrid's place in Norwegian royal history was far larger than her title suggested. When her mother, Crown Princess Märtha, died in 1954, the 22-year-old princess suddenly became the Royal House's leading female representative. For the next 14 years she effectively served as Norway's First Lady, accompanying King Haakon VII and later King Olav V at state visits and major national events.
