Radio Host Says Democrat's Answer For Wanting To Be Governor Is Not Good Enough
Charlamagne Tha God rebuked a Democratic candidate guest to his face for tying in President Donald Trump in his response as to why he wants to be Nevada’s governor.
During Tuesday’s episode of “The Breakfast Club,” Charlamagne bluntly argued that Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford delivered the same answer that’s been rehashed by other candidates. The exchange happened less than a minute after Ford joined the show.
“You know it’s funny, right? Some people thought it was a foregone conclusion that I was going to run, but I didn’t make my mind up, frankly, until after Trump won,” Ford said of why he wants to be governor.
Ford said he mulled over the prospect of running with his family and prayed on it before finalizing his decision.
“We just knew that we’d have a governor who wasn’t going to stand up to Trump, who wasn’t going to defend Nevadans from what I anticipated would be some unlawful actions. ... Whether it’s the tariffs he didn’t stand up to, whether it’s trying to get rid of the Department of Education, whether it’s been birthright citizenship.”
The attorney general added, “Our governor hadn’t stood up, and I knew I would need to … and here we are.”
Charlamagne immediately called him out over his answer.
“I respect that answer, but I don’t like it, and I’m gonna tell you why. Everybody says that. Everybody says, ‘Because of Trump,’” he said. “What is about your vision for Nevada that requires you to have this job?”
Ford contended that Charlamagne’s additional question wasn’t the same as asking why he was running, but responded that he wants to repair Nevadans’ economic strain as consumer prices in America continue to climb.
“Here’s what I’ve learned talking to people all across the state: They broke. Stuff’s too expensive right now,” he said, before noting that housing costs, gas prices and healthcare have been among the complaints for Nevadans.
Ford told Charlamagne he faced financial struggles growing up and therefore understands Nevadans’ economic concerns on a deeper level.
“They want someone who’s going to be able to help them to pay for their lives and take care of themselves and take care of their families. Like me, I’m in a sandwich generation. I’ve got older parents and I have grown kids, but they’re still in my pocket, you understand?”
Arguing that he knows “what they’re going through,” he continued, “Frankly, the word is affordability that you hear all the time, Charlamagne. I didn’t know what that word meant when I was 7 or 8 years old, but I knew my parents couldn’t always afford food. I grew up eating stale candy bars for dinner that my daddy found next to the dumpster behind the grocery store he worked at.”
Ford said that to this day, he keeps a candy bar on his nightstand at home to be “reminded of what struggle feels like.”
