. CHAPTER 4 — The Script Evan Couldn’t Control

Evan Hart knew how to survive scandal.

He had survived a leaked contract, a canceled film, a drunk director, a hostile reporter, and two lawsuits that vanished after quiet settlements. He understood timing. Tone. Tears. He knew when to apologize and when to accuse. He knew cameras loved humility when it came from a handsome face.

But Room 304 was not a red carpet.

The doctor stood firm. The technician kept the ultrasound image frozen. The nurse had stepped closer to the door, blocking any easy exit. Eleanor remained beside Mara like a wall built from years of verdicts.

Evan lifted both hands. “All right. Let’s not turn a private family misunderstanding into a legal circus.”

Mara whispered, “It wasn’t a misunderstanding.”

His head turned slowly.

The air changed.

“What did you say?” he asked.

Mara looked down at her belly. “I said it wasn’t a misunderstanding.”

Eleanor felt her daughter’s hand shaking, but Mara did not pull away.

Evan laughed once. “Honey, you’re emotional. You’re exhausted. Your mother is filling your head with—”

“You grabbed me last night,” Mara said.

The words barely rose above the machine hum, but they landed like broken glass.

Evan stared at her.

Mara’s voice cracked, but she continued. “I asked you not to announce the pregnancy on the charity livestream. You said the public deserved to share our joy. I said our daughter wasn’t publicity.”

Eleanor’s throat tightened.

Evan’s eyes darted toward the nurse. “Mara.”

“You pulled me by the shoulder,” she said. “I hit the dresser. Then you told me makeup could fix anything.”

Silence.

Dr. Rao set her tablet down. “Mrs. Hart, I’m going to ask you some questions privately.”

“No,” Evan said.

Every face turned to him.

He softened instantly. “I mean, she needs me. She’s my wife.”

Mara looked at him, and something old and loyal inside her finally broke free from fear.

“No,” she whispered. “I need you to leave.”

Evan’s smile vanished completely.

For one raw second, the room saw the man behind the magazine covers.

Then the elevator doors opened again behind him, and two hospital security officers stepped into view.

Eleanor had pressed the emergency call button five minutes earlier.

The script had changed.

And Evan was no longer the one holding the pen.
