CHAPTER 2 — THE PAPERS

Several long seconds passed.

Neither woman moved.

The younger woman's smile began to fade.

Just slightly.

Because something felt wrong.

The older woman wasn't crying.

Wasn't arguing.

Wasn't leaving.

Instead, she calmly opened her purse.

Reached inside.

And removed several folded documents.

Old papers.

Official papers.

Important papers.

Without speaking, she walked forward.

Placed them gently on the desk.

One by one.

The sound seemed louder than it should have.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The younger woman frowned.

"What is this?"

No answer.

The older woman simply stepped back.

Allowing her to read.

The younger woman's eyes scanned the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The color immediately drained from her face.

Her confident posture vanished.

"What...?"

She grabbed the documents.

Reading faster.

Desperately.

As realization began to hit.

The company.

The estate.

The properties.

The family trust.

May you like

None of it belonged to her.

It never had.
