CHAPTER 1: The Girl at the Crystal Doors

Long before he became the old man in rags, Thomas Bell had worn a clean uniform and driven polished black cars through the Whitmore estate gates.

He had known Amelia before grief made her suspicious and before pride made her father distant. She had been the only person in the house who asked if the staff had eaten. She remembered birthdays. She stole cookies from the kitchen and blamed the family dog. She once sat in the garage for an hour while Thomas fixed a tire, asking him what ordinary life felt like.

When she married Daniel Hart, Thomas had been one of the few people who congratulated her.

After the crash, he found her by accident.

He had been driving back from a late errand when he saw smoke near the old cliff road. The car burned below the guardrail, but Amelia had crawled free. Her arm was broken. Blood darkened her hair. She kept saying one thing.

“Don’t call the house.”

Thomas took her to a small clinic under a false name.

He thought fear would pass.

It did not.

Weeks became months. Amelia received letters that broke her. She believed Everett had disowned her completely. When Daniel died of illness two years later, she sold everything but the teddy bear, the bracelet, and one envelope of documents she told Thomas to guard with his life.

Then Lily was born.

Amelia loved the child with the desperate tenderness of someone who had lost too much family to waste even one day.

When Amelia became sick, Thomas promised her he would take Lily to Everett.

“I have tried,” he told the old billionaire later that night. “God help me, I tried. Your gates changed codes. Your assistants changed numbers. Ms. Blackwell’s office told police I was unstable.”

Everett listened without interrupting.

Thomas looked ashamed.

“When money ran out, I slept in shelters with her. Sometimes in bus stations. I kept waiting for one door to open.”

Everett looked at Lily, still asleep.

“It opened tonight,” he said.
