. CHAPTER 2 — The Woman in Emerald

Vivian Cross had spent twenty years teaching rooms to fear her before she spoke.

She had married into the Harrington world not with love, but with precision. She knew who owned which company, which board member drank too much, which cousin could be bought, and which scandal could be buried before breakfast. Tonight’s gala was supposed to be her triumph: a public celebration of the Harrington Children’s Foundation, with cameras, donors, and enough applause to make everyone forget the rumors.

Then she saw the child.

A skinny little girl in a red dress, standing under million-dollar chandeliers with Elena Vale’s eyes.

Vivian felt the past open beneath her feet.

Elena had been a mistake. A maid’s daughter who had somehow captured the heart of Adrian Harrington, the youngest heir and the only one in the family who believed love mattered more than bloodlines. Vivian had made sure Elena disappeared before the engagement became public. She had told everyone Elena had taken money and left. She had told Adrian worse.

Adrian never fully recovered.

And now this child stood in the hallway wearing the old pearl necklace Adrian’s mother had once given Elena. The necklace Vivian herself had ordered stolen years ago. The necklace that should have been locked in a private safe, not glowing against a little girl’s red dress.

“You have no right to wear that,” Vivian hissed.

Lily flinched. “My mom gave it to me.”

“Your mother is a liar.”

“My mom doesn’t lie.”

Vivian’s hand shot forward. Her fingers hooked under the pearls and yanked. The gold wire snapped first. Then the string broke. Pearls scattered across the marble like tiny white bones.

Lily gasped.

The sound was not loud, but it seemed to strike the hallway harder than a scream. She clutched her bare throat as the pearls rolled under polished shoes and toward the edge of the carpet. A few guests turned. A server froze with a tray of champagne. The man in the black suit stopped mid-step.

Vivian bent close to the child’s face. “Now listen carefully. You will leave this hotel, and you will forget whatever story your mother told you.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears. “That was all I had from her.”

“Then you had nothing worth keeping.”

At the end of the hall, the man in the black suit crouched and picked up one pearl.

His name was Adrian Harrington.

And the moment he saw the tiny gold mark on the pearl’s clasp fragment, every breath left his body.
