. CHAPTER 5 — The Man at the Door

Alexander Vale looked older than the photographs in the hallway. The years had sharpened him. His black coat made him seem carved from the shadow of the doorway, but his eyes were alive, alert, and full of a disbelief that quickly became rage.

No one moved.

Emma’s first thought was not that he might be her father. It was that she should stand before he saw her like this. She pushed one hand against the marble, but her wrist shook. The room tilted. She had spent too many hours kneeling, and her body betrayed her.

Alexander crossed the foyer in four long strides.

“Don’t get up,” he said, and the gentleness in his voice almost broke her.

Victoria found her performance again. “Darling, you should have called. We had a problem with a maid, nothing more.”

Alexander did not look at her. He crouched in front of Emma, careful not to touch her without permission. “What is your name?”

“Emma,” she whispered.

His face changed at the sound of it. Not enough for anyone else to notice, perhaps, but Emma saw it. A small fracture. A memory striking bone.

“Emma Reed?” he asked.

Her breath caught. “Yes.”

The attorney behind him opened the sealed folder.

Victoria stepped forward. “Alexander, she has been lying since she arrived. She invented a connection to you, stole my bracelet, and—”

“Enough.”

The word cracked through the foyer.

Victoria stopped as if slapped.

Alexander rose slowly. “I received a call from my London office this morning. A woman named Claire Reed attempted to contact me three times before her death. Those messages were intercepted.” He turned toward Victoria. “By someone inside this house.”

Color drained from Victoria’s face, but she lifted her chin. “That is absurd.”

The attorney held up a clear plastic sleeve. Inside was a copy of an old photograph: Alexander, younger, smiling beside Claire on a beach, his hand resting over hers. Emma stared at it, unable to breathe. She had seen half that image once in her mother’s drawer. The other half had been torn away.

Alexander’s voice lowered. “Claire sent me a letter. It never reached me.”

Emma’s tears spilled before she could stop them. “She told me to bring it to you.”

Victoria laughed too loudly. “A tragic story, but stories are not proof.”

Alexander looked at the bracelet in Victoria’s hand.

“No,” he said. “But hidden cameras are.”

At that, Mrs. Dalton covered her mouth.

Victoria looked toward the ceiling corners, suddenly understanding that the mansion she controlled had been watching her too.
