. CHAPTER 9 — Lily Hale Speaks

The room quieted as Nora stepped onto the small platform where Clara and Preston were supposed to exchange vows.
She looked tiny beneath the chandeliers, wrapped in a jacket too large for her shoulders, with a broken locket in one hand and nineteen years of stolen life in the other.
Clara stood beside her, close enough that their sleeves touched.
Nora faced Vivian.
“My name was Lily Hale,” she said.
The words shook, but they did not break.
“I don’t remember everything. I don’t remember my mother’s voice clearly. I don’t remember the day I was taken except for a hallway and being cold. But I remember my sister telling me this locket would bring me back.”
She lifted it.
“I carried it through foster homes, shelters, cheap apartments, and kitchens where people said I was lucky to have any job at all. I was told not to dream above my station. I was told family was something other people had.”
Her eyes moved over the guests. Some looked ashamed. Some cried. Some watched as if it were still entertainment.
“This morning, I came here to serve food. I was afraid to spill anything. I was afraid to breathe too loudly. Mrs. Westford looked at me and saw someone disposable.”
She turned back to Vivian.
“But I was never disposable. I was hidden.”
Thomas Hale covered his face.
Clara took Lily’s hand.
The attorney approached Vivian with police officers now visible behind him. “Vivian Carr Westford, officers have enough for immediate detention pending investigation into kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy.”
Vivian’s mouth opened, but no queenly sentence came.
Preston stepped away from her. Cowardice, Clara thought, had always been his truest inheritance.
As officers escorted Vivian through the ballroom, Lily did not smile.
May you like
Neither did Clara.
Justice did not feel like victory at first. It felt like standing at the edge of a burned house and realizing someone had finally stopped pretending there had never been a fire.
