● CHAPTER 7: Lily Wakes

Lily woke on a Thursday afternoon to the sound of rain.

For a few seconds, she thought she was back in the apartment, listening for Maddie’s footsteps and Noah’s cries. Panic came first. It always did. Her hands moved over the blanket, searching for the baby.

A nurse touched her shoulder. “Ms. Shaw, you’re safe.”

“Noah,” Lily rasped.

“He’s safe.”

“Maddie?”

“Safe too.”

Lily turned her head and saw Caleb standing by the window.

Seven years disappeared from his face all at once. He was not the man from headlines, not the disciplined heir, not the owner of stores and buildings and responsibilities. He was her brother. Older, tired, guilty, and trying very hard not to break.

Lily stared at him.

“You came,” she whispered.

Caleb stepped closer. “I should have come sooner.”

She closed her eyes, and a tear slid into her hair. “I wrote.”

“I found them.”

Her mouth trembled.

“In Father’s study,” he said.

Lily gave a small, bitter laugh that became a cough. “Of course.”

The door opened slowly.

Maddie stood there holding the rail of Noah’s bassinet as a nurse rolled it in. She looked smaller in the hospital light. For the first time, she looked like a child and not a soldier disguised as one.

“Mama?” she said.

Lily made a sound Caleb had never heard from an adult. It was grief, relief, apology, love, and pain crushed into one breath.

Maddie ran.

The nurse barely caught the IV line as Lily lifted her arms. Maddie climbed onto the bed carefully, as if afraid her mother might vanish if touched too hard. Noah woke and fussed. Lily touched his cheek with shaking fingers.

“My babies,” she whispered. “My brave babies.”

Maddie pulled back, offended through tears. “Uncle Caleb says brave is what adults say when they failed.”

Lily looked at Caleb.

He looked down. “I may have said that.”

For the first time in the room, Lily smiled.

Then the smile faded. “Gloria?”

Caleb nodded once. “She’s moving.”

“She always moves first.”

“Not this time.”

Lily grabbed his wrist with surprising strength. “Caleb, listen. She made me sign something after Noah was born. I was weak, and she said if I didn’t sign, she’d report me for neglect. She said Maddie would be placed somewhere separate from Noah. I didn’t understand all the words.”

“We’ll find it.”

“It gave her control of my trust.”

“We’ll undo it.”

“She has doctors. Lawyers. People who owe her favors.”

Caleb looked at Maddie, then Noah.

“So do I.”

Lily’s eyes searched him. “Do you believe me?”

The question landed heavier than any accusation.

He reached into the folder and removed the first letter she had written seven years earlier. He unfolded it carefully and placed it in her hand.

“I believe every word I was never allowed to read.”

Lily pressed the paper to her chest.

Maddie watched them both.

“Does this mean we’re rich?” she asked.

Lily laughed and cried at the same time.

Caleb answered first.

“It means you’re family.”

Maddie considered that.

“Can family still buy milk?”

May you like

Caleb smiled, though his eyes were wet.

“As much as Noah wants.”
