. CHAPTER 1 — The Perfect Room

A wedding crowd is a living animal. It can purr, it can gossip, and when the scent of disaster spreads, it can turn its whole body toward blood.

Vanessa felt it happening. The bridesmaids looked anywhere but at her. Her father rubbed his mouth as if numbers were falling out of it. The investors from Hawthorne International exchanged glances that meant lawyers. Even the priest closed his book, which seemed unnecessarily dramatic but deeply appropriate.

Nora touched Andrew’s sleeve. “Please. Don’t make a scene for me.”

Andrew gave a short, humorless laugh. “You just got slapped at my wedding. The scene has RSVP’d.”

A nervous chuckle rippled through the room. Vanessa hated him for making them laugh. Humor turned sympathy into a weapon.

She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “Andrew, don’t humiliate me. Not now.”

He looked at the red mark blooming across Nora’s cheek. “You did that yourself.”

Vanessa swallowed. “I didn’t know who she was.”

And there it was—the confession dressed as an excuse. Andrew’s expression changed, not louder, not angrier, just colder.

“So if she were only the florist, it would be fine?”

Silence.

The words landed harder than the slap. Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no elegant answer came. Her entire life had trained her to sort people by usefulness, money, last name, and access. She had never expected someone to ask the obvious question in a room full of witnesses.

A security guard approached, uncertain. “Mr. Hawthorne?”

Andrew did not take his eyes off Vanessa. “No one touches Nora.”

Then the ballroom doors opened again. This time, three men in dark suits entered with a woman carrying a leather folder. Vanessa recognized her: Marianne Vale, Hawthorne’s general counsel. She was not on the ceremony program.

Marianne walked down the aisle like an ending wearing heels.

Andrew finally looked away from Vanessa. “You brought the documents?”
