. CHAPTER 7 — The Boardroom Door Opens

By morning, Jefferson Prep had a problem it could not bury.

Ava’s video had already spread through private parent chats before Vivian’s lawyers could send the first threat. Students who had laughed began deleting comments. Teachers who had looked away began “remembering concerns.” Principal Harlan called an emergency board meeting, then looked sick when Ethan walked in with his father.

Thomas Vale had built hotels, hospitals, and half the skyline downtown. He was not a loud man. He was worse: calm, precise, and impossible to distract when angry.

Mia arrived with her mother, Elena Carter, who wore her work uniform beneath an old coat because she had come straight from the night shift. Mia used crutches instead of the damaged prosthetic. Every step into the boardroom felt like walking into a room that had never expected her to enter by the front door.

Madison sat beside Vivian, eyes red from crying but chin high.

Vivian spoke first. “This has been blown out of proportion.”

Thomas placed a folder on the table. “A disabled student was assaulted on school property while faculty watched.”

“Assaulted is a legal term,” Vivian said.

“So is evidence.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were printed stills from Ava’s video, Mia’s hospital records from childhood, the old newspaper article, and a report from the detective Thomas had hired overnight. The report confirmed what he had suspected: Mia Carter was the unnamed girl from the accident. Her mother had declined the reward money. The family had received no support afterward.

Thomas looked at Elena.

“I owe you an apology that is nine years late.”

Elena’s eyes glistened, but her voice stayed firm. “You owe my daughter safety.”

“Yes,” he said. “I do.”

Principal Harlan cleared his throat. “We can suspend Madison temporarily while we review—”

“No,” Ethan interrupted.

Everyone looked at him.

He stood beside Mia, not in front of her.

“You don’t get to review whether the video is real,” he said. “You don’t get to punish quietly and call it fairness. Mia is not a scandal. She is the reason I’m alive.”

Madison finally broke. “She’s stealing my family!”

May you like

Mia flinched, but this time she didn’t lower her eyes.

“No,” she said. “I’m asking you to stop hurting people.”
