. CHAPTER 1 — The Ring They Thought Was Cheap

The ring was small enough to disappear inside a cruel fist.

That was the first thing Lily Morgan noticed as she stood in the center of the Harrington Grand Salon, her cheeks wet, her white blouse wrinkled from the hands that had shoved her forward. Around her, gold-trimmed walls shone under chandelier light. Champagne glasses waited on silver trays. Executives in black suits stood in a perfect half circle, silent not because they were innocent, but because silence was safer than defending a woman with no power.

Maxine Vale held Lily’s ring between two manicured fingers as if it were something dirty.

“This?” Maxine said, smiling for the room. “This is what you were crying over?”

Lily reached one trembling hand forward. “Please. It was my mother’s.”

The laugh that followed did not come from Maxine first. It came from Preston Hale, the handsome senior director leaning beside her, his tie loosened like he already owned the building. “Your mother’s? Sweetheart, people like you don’t inherit rings. You find them in pawnshop bins.”

Several people looked away. One woman near the marble fireplace lowered her eyes. A young assistant pressed her lips together. But no one moved.

Lily had entered the room that afternoon to serve coffee during a private investor meeting. She had kept her head down, walked carefully, and said “yes, ma’am” so softly that most of the guests forgot she was there. She had not come to challenge anyone. She had not come to embarrass anyone. She had only come wearing the one thing left from the life she had lost: a thin antique ring with a faded blue stone and a crest so old the lines were almost worn smooth.

Then Maxine noticed it.

One second Lily was placing a cup beside a folder. The next, Maxine’s cold fingers caught her wrist. “Where did you get that?”

Before Lily could answer, Maxine twisted the ring off.

Now Lily stood in front of the entire room, stripped of the only piece of family she had left.

Maxine’s smile sharpened. “Do you know who I am?”

Lily swallowed. “Yes, Ms. Vale.”

“Then you understand why I don’t tolerate thieves near my guests.”

“I didn’t steal it.”

Maxine stepped closer. “Then prove it.”

Lily looked around, hoping for one face that believed her. She found none. The room had already decided what her uniform meant.

Maxine dropped the ring into her own clutch.

Lily’s breath caught.

Preston folded his arms. “Call security.”

And somewhere beyond the closed golden doors, footsteps approached.
