CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH

The room erupted into whispers.
Richard staggered backward.
His knees suddenly weak.
The boy's voice echoed in his mind.
Mommy told me to find.
Impossible.
His wife had died years ago.
Hadn't she?
The waitress slowly removed her hand from his grasp.
Then she reached inside her apron pocket.
And pulled out a worn envelope.
The paper was old.
Yellowed by time.
Carefully preserved.
Richard stared at it.
Then his heart nearly stopped.
Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.
His wife's.
The woman gently placed the envelope onto the table.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody dared.
Richard's trembling hands opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And a photograph.
A photograph that had never appeared in any police report.
Never appeared in any family album.
Never appeared anywhere.
Because someone had hidden it.
The image showed his wife.
Alive.
Holding a newborn baby.
Standing beside another woman.
The waitress.
Tears filled Richard's eyes.
"What is this?" he whispered.
The waitress finally spoke.
Her voice calm.
Painfully calm.
"Your wife never wanted me to tell you."
Richard looked up.
His entire world hanging by a thread.
The woman took a slow breath.
Then delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"The woman you buried..."
Silence swallowed the room.
Every guest leaned forward.
Every heart stopped.
And then—
"...was not your wife."
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Because in a single moment...
May you like
A dead woman had returned.
And a decade of lies had finally come to an end.
