. CHAPTER 2 — The Man Who Came Back Changed

Daniel did not hug Ava right away.

That was the first thing Grace noticed, and it chilled her more than the bruises on his face.

Ava wrapped both arms around his neck and buried her face into his shoulder, crying so hard her words came out broken. “Daddy, I knew it was you. I knew it. Mommy said wait, but I knew.”

Daniel’s hands hovered in the air.

They were shaking.

The crowd around them softened into a ring of strangers. Some smiled. Some wiped their eyes. Others lifted phones before lowering them again, as if the moment was too sacred to steal. Above them, a huge American flag hung from the ceiling, unmoving in the cold airport light.

Grace walked toward them slowly. Her knees felt weak. For months she had imagined running to him, hitting his chest, kissing his face, demanding answers. But seeing him now—thin, bruised, older than any thirty-three-year-old man should look—emptied every accusation from her body.

Daniel finally placed one hand on Ava’s back.

The gesture was careful, almost frightened.

“Bug,” he whispered.

Ava pulled back. Her face crumpled with happiness. “You remember.”

Daniel swallowed hard. “I remember that.”

Grace stopped a few feet away.

His eyes found hers over Ava’s shoulder, and she saw the truth before he said a word. He remembered some things. Not all. Enough to be tortured by the missing pieces.

“Grace,” he said, and her name sounded like something he had been repeating in the dark to keep himself alive.

She covered her mouth.

Daniel tried to stand straighter, but his body betrayed him. Pain flashed across his face. Ava felt it and loosened her grip immediately, frightened.

“Did I hurt you?” she asked.

“No.” Daniel forced a smile that nearly broke him. “Never.”

Grace stepped closer and saw details the uniform could not hide: mud-dark shadows under his eyes, new scars along his jaw, a bandage tucked beneath his collar. This was her husband, but war had returned him with edges sharpened and pieces missing.

For one second she remembered the last call before his convoy left.

“Tell Ava I’ll bring her a snow globe from every country I pass through,” he had laughed.

Then the screen froze. Then the line died.

Now he stood in front of her, alive, and she could not decide whether to thank God or scream at Him.

Ava placed one palm against Daniel’s bruised cheek. “Who did this to you?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That’s a long story, baby.”

Grace looked at his duffel on the floor. A sealed envelope was tucked into the side pocket, stamped with a military hospital address and her name.

Her heart dropped.

May you like

Because that envelope had been sent before.

And she had never received it.
