. CHAPTER 8 — The Footage

By evening, the story was already trying to escape.

A junior board member leaked that Grant had been suspended. A resort manager called Miriam in tears, saying staff across three properties were sharing their own stories. A publicist asked whether Claire wanted to issue a gentle statement about “private family difficulty.” Claire said no.

Gentle language had protected Grant long enough.

The official statement was short: Grant Ellison has been removed from leadership following documented misconduct. Claire Marlowe Ellison is safe and cooperating with authorities. The Marlowe Trust will begin an independent review of workplace culture across all Ellison-branded properties.

No mention of the slap. No dramatic details. No revenge.

But the footage existed, and everyone inside the company knew it.

The next morning, Claire sat in her father’s study while reports arrived. Vivian had used company accounts for personal spending. Grant had approved hush payments to former employees who complained about verbal abuse. Managers had been pressured to fire staff who “made the family uncomfortable.” One file contained Rosa’s old termination note from the Christmas party: attitude issue.

Claire read until her eyes burned.

At noon, Grant called from an unknown number.

She let it ring once before answering on speaker, with Miriam present.

“You ruined my life,” he said.

Claire looked at the legal pads spread before her. “No. I stopped funding the version of it that required everyone else to suffer.”

“You think people will believe you? I’ll say you planned this. I’ll say you baited me.”

Claire’s stomach tightened, but her voice stayed calm. “Then I’ll release the full pattern.”

Silence.

He knew what that meant. Not just the slap. The hallway threats. The broken vase. Vivian coaching staff. His own voice calling Claire useless, unstable, replaceable. The empire had been built on polish, and polish could not survive sound.

“You wouldn’t,” he whispered.

Claire closed her eyes. She remembered the coffee machine clicking, her cheek burning, Vivian smiling.

“I don’t want to,” she said. “But I’m not afraid to.”

For the first time since she had known him, Grant had nothing to say.
