. CHAPTER 3 — The Agreement on the Table

Before the paramedics arrived, Daniel saw the papers scattered near the side table.

He had not noticed them at first. His whole world was on the floor, breathing in pain and clutching her belly. But as he knelt beside Evelyn again, one sheet of paper lay inches from her hand. The title at the top was printed in bold legal language.

POST-BIRTH SEPARATION AGREEMENT.

Daniel picked it up with two fingers, as if it were poisoned.

The paragraphs were neat and cruel. Evelyn would accept a private settlement. She would give up all claims to the Cross family estate. She would agree to limited custody discussions after birth. She would never speak publicly about the marriage.

His face hardened with every line.

“You brought this to my pregnant wife?” he asked without looking at his mother.

Margaret’s voice returned, brittle but defiant. “I brought protection to this family. That woman came from nowhere. She has no pedigree, no background worthy of our name, and suddenly she is carrying your heir.”

Evelyn closed her eyes. The word “heir” hurt more than the bruises. To Margaret, the baby had never been a child. It was an asset, a continuation of an empire, a trophy to be claimed.

Daniel crumpled the agreement in his fist.

“She is my wife,” he said. “Not a threat. Not a mistake. Not something you can buy and erase.”

Margaret laughed once, sharp and empty. “You think love protects you from consequences? She signed nothing. She has no power here.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn then, and the grief in his eyes changed into something Margaret did not recognize.

Certainty.

“She has more power in this house than you ever understood,” he said.

Margaret frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”

The first paramedic entered through the open doors, followed by two more carrying equipment. Daniel moved aside but stayed close enough for Evelyn to feel his hand around hers. The lead paramedic asked questions. Evelyn answered through trembling breaths. Daniel gave her medical details, gestational weeks, allergies, doctor’s name, everything his panic somehow remembered.

As they prepared to lift her, Evelyn gripped his sleeve. “Don’t leave me with her.”

Daniel bent low until his forehead touched hers. “Never again.”

Margaret watched from the staircase, pale now, but still trying to stand like a queen.

Daniel rose and faced her.

“When we come back,” he said, “you won’t be waiting here.”
