● CHAPTER 8: Evelyn Whitaker Comes Home

Evelyn Whitaker did not enter rooms. She conquered them politely.

At seventy-one, she wore a navy suit, pearls, and the kind of expression that made CEOs remember childhood mistakes. She had flown from Palm Beach, read a dossier on the plane, and arrived at her own foundation gala ready to remove someone from history.

She walked straight to Nora first.

The child stiffened.

Evelyn stopped a respectful distance away. Her eyes moved to the bracelet. Her hand trembled only once.

“I wore that at my wedding,” Evelyn said softly.

Nora touched the silver. “My mom said it belonged to brave women.”

Evelyn’s mouth pressed into a line.

“She was right.”

Then the old woman turned to Celeste, and winter entered the hall.

“My son is emotional,” Evelyn said. “I am not. So perhaps you would prefer to explain this to me.”

Celeste looked around for allies and found only witnesses.

Evelyn lifted a small recorder. “Detective Maddox sent my attorney the garden footage. He also sent the file connecting your family trust to the driver who disappeared after Lillian’s crash.”

Celeste swallowed.

“My lawyers are waiting in the library,” Evelyn continued. “The police have been notified. Your car is being blocked at the gate for procedural reasons, though I am told that phrase is doing a lot of work.”

A nervous laugh ran through the crowd.

Even Adrian almost smiled.

Celeste’s mask finally cracked.

“You people act like saints,” she said, voice shaking. “Do you know what it’s like to live near this family? To watch every door open for a Whitaker? My father spent his life begging for contracts your people ignored.”

Evelyn’s gaze did not move. “So you punished a baby?”

“I didn’t know about the baby then.”

Maddox stepped forward from the side hall. “That implies you knew about something.”

Celeste realized too late what she had said.

The room heard it too.

Adrian stared at her with cold astonishment. “What did you know?”

Celeste’s eyes shone with furious tears. “I knew Lillian was leaving.”

Adrian went still.

“She came to my father’s office,” Celeste said. “She had documents. She said Marrow Holdings was laundering money through charity shells. She was going to give them to you. My father panicked. He hired Vale to scare her off the road. Not kill her. Just scare her.”

Nora clutched Mrs. Delaney’s hand.

Adrian’s voice was deadly calm. “Where did Lillian go after the crash?”

Celeste shook her head. “I don’t know.”

Maddox said, “You know enough.”

“She survived,” Celeste snapped. “For a while. My father found out later she’d been taken in by a woman upstate. By then she had no memory of who she was. No papers. No money. He let it stay buried.”

“And the child?” Evelyn asked.

Celeste looked at Nora, and for one terrible second there was no remorse in her face. Only resentment.

“She should have stayed buried too.”

Adrian moved like he might cross the room.

Nora’s small voice stopped him.

“Dad?”

May you like

It was the first time she called him that.

Everything in Adrian broke open.
