● CHAPTER 8 — The Divorce Papers in Her Purse

By midnight, the mansion was full of quiet professionals.

Investigators copied files. The accountant sealed drawers. Staff members gave statements with the relief of people finally allowed to say what they had seen. Vivienne remained in the library with her attorney, her green suit still flawless, though her kingdom had begun to collapse around her.

Emily went to the small balcony outside the ballroom.

Rain tapped softly against the stone railing. Behind her, Caleb stepped through the door but kept his distance.

“May I stand here?” he asked.

It was such a careful question that Emily almost cried.

“Yes.”

He leaned against the other side of the doorway, hands in his pockets. “I bought the cake myself.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I brought it in, maybe tonight could reset everything. Stupid, right?”

“Hope isn’t stupid,” Emily said. “But it’s not a cleaning product. It doesn’t erase mold just because it smells nice.”

A broken laugh escaped him. “That may be the most Emily sentence you’ve ever said.”

She smiled despite herself, then looked away before he could mistake it for surrender.

From her purse, she removed another envelope.

Caleb saw it and went still.

“Divorce papers?”

“Separation papers,” she said. “I signed them this afternoon.”

The pain on his face was immediate and deserved.

“I was going to give them to you after dinner,” she continued. “Before your mother turned my birthday into a courtroom.”

Caleb nodded slowly. “Do you still want that?”

Emily looked through the glass at the ruined party. Once, she had thought marriage meant being chosen forever. Now she understood that being chosen once did not protect you from being abandoned in small ways.

“I want space,” she said. “I want honesty. I want you to stop acting like love is proven by grand gestures after damage, instead of ordinary courage before it.”

Caleb closed his eyes.

“I can do the work,” he said.

“Then do it without asking me to watch every minute.”

Inside, Agent Benton called Emily’s name.

Emily turned to go.

May you like

Caleb did not stop her.

That was the first right thing he did all night.
