Sabrina Stops Smiling

Chapter 12 - Sabrina Stops Smiling
Sabrina spent her first night in custody insisting she was a witness.
By the second, she wanted a lawyer.
By the third, she wanted a deal.
Marcus met her in an interview room with Detective Brooks. Sabrina wore county gray instead of black silk. Without makeup, she looked younger and more frightened, but not kinder.
“I never planned the violence,” she said.
“You counted it,” Brooks replied.
“I was drunk.”
“You corrected the number.”
Sabrina’s mouth tightened. “Adrian was supposed to scare her. The incapacity hearing needed instability, not injuries.”
Marcus slid a photograph across the table. It showed the text message captured by the chandelier camera.
MAKE HER UNSTABLE ON CAMERA. WE NEED THE HEARING.
“Who sent it?”
Sabrina looked away.
“The same person who told you Elena owned the trust?”
Silence.
“The same person on your recording?”
Sabrina leaned back. “I want immunity.”
Brooks laughed once. “You want a new planet.”
They negotiated for six hours.
Finally Sabrina gave them a name.
Eleanor Voss.
“She approached me two years ago,” Sabrina said. “She said Adrian was ambitious but undisciplined. She wanted someone close to him.”
“Why you?”
“My father worked for Hartwell.”
Marcus searched his memory.
“Thomas Cole. Internal audit.”
Sabrina’s eyes hardened. “He reported accounting irregularities. Nathaniel Hart fired him. Six months later he killed himself.”
Elena had never heard the story.
According to Sabrina, Eleanor offered revenge and money. The plan was to use Adrian to drain Vale Meridian, expose Hartwell’s secret ownership, and destroy the family’s reputation.
“Then why steal the pension funds?” Brooks asked.
“Because revenge is expensive.”
The answer was so cold it seemed rehearsed.
Sabrina claimed she began an affair with Adrian to control him. She fed his resentment, convinced him Elena was weak, and encouraged him to seek legal control of her assets.
“Did you love him?” Marcus asked.
Sabrina almost smiled.
“I knew him.”
It was not an answer.
Brooks turned off the recorder.
“You are describing yourself as a strategist. The video describes you as an accomplice.”
Sabrina’s confidence finally cracked.
“I can give you Eleanor’s archive.”
“Where?”
“She kept copies of everything. Payments, recordings, original files. She called it insurance.”
“Where is it?”
Sabrina looked at the one-way glass, as if Elena might be behind it.
“The Hartwell building. Behind the founder’s portrait in the old boardroom.”
Marcus frowned. “That wall is solid.”
“No,” Sabrina said. “That wall is a door.”
A search team opened the hidden compartment that evening.
Inside were decades of documents.
The first file bore Nathaniel Hart’s name.
The second bore Julian’s.
The third bore Elena’s.
