Chapter 12 - The Employee Vote

Maya accepted the stewardship under one condition.

The golden share would not remain under a single employee after the crisis. She drafted an amendment transferring its power to a council elected across every Whitmore property.

The staff representatives approved unanimously.

“Now,” Maya said, “we use it.”

The employee council suspended Victoria permanently, authorized full cooperation with law enforcement, and released the Harbor evidence publicly. They also froze every aircraft, vehicle, and account tied to her.

Victoria’s car was found abandoned near a private airstrip.

A Whitmore medical jet had taken off minutes earlier using a false destination.

Nathan traced the flight through a maintenance beacon Victoria forgot to disable. It headed toward a private island off North Carolina owned by Sloan Industrial.

Maya joined law enforcement at the coastal command center. She had no tactical role, but Victoria refused to speak with anyone else.

During a satellite call, Victoria appeared inside the island’s old hotel. Eleanor sat in a wheelchair behind her, conscious but weak.

“You wanted power,” Victoria said. “Now you can learn what it costs.”

“I wanted my mother’s death to stop being a line in your accounting.”

Victoria smiled.

“Elena died because she believed a company would thank her for telling the truth.”

“No. She died because you set a fire.”

The smile vanished.

Maya kept her talking while agents approached by boat.

Victoria demanded the red folder and ninety million dollars in shares. She claimed Daniel’s location would die with her.

Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“Daniel is in suite 611.”

Victoria turned.

The founder had noticed a hotel brochure on the island desk showing Whitmore’s Montenegro property. The medical complex had been built inside its sealed sixth floor.

Suite 611 was not only an archive code.

It was Daniel’s prison.

Victoria struck Eleanor across the face.

Maya’s breath stopped.

The live call transmitted the assault to police and to hundreds of employees watching from command centers after Victoria accidentally routed it through the corporate emergency network.

For the second time, she created her own witnesses.

Agents breached the island hotel.

Victoria tried to escape through a service tunnel but found the exit locked. The same centralized control system she installed to monitor employees sealed the door after the council revoked her credentials.

She was arrested beside a sign that read AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

Eleanor was flown to a hospital.

Before the helicopter lifted, she caught Maya’s hand.

“You came.”
