The Camera Above Table Nine

Chapter 02 - The Camera Above Table Nine
Charlotte demanded that the restaurant manager call security.
She claimed Mia had staged the accident to attract Daniel’s attention and that he had humiliated her in front of their most important donors.
The manager, Arthur Bellamy, did not move.
He had seen enough powerful guests abuse staff to know that certainty often arrived before facts.
“There is a camera above Table Nine,” he said.
Charlotte’s face tightened.
The footage played on a monitor in the private office.
Mia approached with the tray.
Charlotte looked directly at her.
Then the silver heel moved sideways.
The camera captured the contact clearly.
Daniel watched once.
Charlotte watched herself three times.
“That angle makes it look deliberate.”
Arthur paused the image.
“No angle moved your foot.”
Charlotte turned on Mia, who sat nearby with a bandaged palm and ice around her ankle.
“You recorded this on purpose.”
Mia looked confused.
“The restaurant records every dining room.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Do not speak to her again.”
Charlotte laughed sharply.
“You don’t get to command me because you’re angry.”
“No. But the manager can remove you.”
Arthur signaled security.
Charlotte looked toward the donors.
None defended her.
Her father’s business partner stared at the floor. Two foundation trustees quietly left the room. A woman who had praised Charlotte’s charity work minutes earlier deleted the photographs she had taken with her.
As security approached, Charlotte pointed at Daniel.
“You’ll regret choosing a stranger over your future.”
Daniel answered, “The future I planned disappeared when I watched you enjoy hurting her.”
Charlotte left through the main dining room without the ring on her finger.
Outside, reporters waiting for the donor dinner photographed everything.
Within an hour, the video appeared online.
By midnight, millions had watched the plates fall.
But Mia knew the most dangerous part of the night had not been recorded in the dining room.
Before the dinner began, she had found invoices inside Charlotte’s private event folder showing that money from the Carter Foundation had been sent to companies that did not exist.
The broken plates were not the first reason Charlotte wanted her frightened.
They were the first punishment.
The security recording also captured several seconds before Mia entered the frame. Charlotte glanced toward the camera, then shifted her body to block the donors’ view while leaving the lens unobstructed by accident.
She had calculated the humiliation for human witnesses, not technological ones.
Arthur saved three independent copies before anyone from the foundation could request access. He had learned that recordings involving wealthy guests sometimes disappeared after urgent calls from lawyers.
Daniel asked Mia whether she wanted the footage released.
“No,” she said. “Not unless investigators need it.”
The video belonged to evidence, not entertainment.

It reached the public only because one guest uploaded his phone recording. That version lacked the clearest angle and allowed Charlotte’s supporters to invent doubt.
Arthur’s complete file would later matter more than millions of opinions formed from an incomplete clip.
