Chapter 06 - The Camera in Margaret’s Study
Margaret’s phone contained a map of the Bennett estate.
One location was marked with a red circle: the antique clock inside her former study.
Police removed the clock from storage.
Behind its face was a tiny camera.
Margaret installed it after noticing medication missing from her cabinet and files moved from her desk.
The camera recorded her final week.
Caroline entered the study with Victor.
They discussed using Havenbrook to obtain control of Emma’s trust before she turned twenty-one.
Victor worried Margaret would expose the transfers.
Caroline answered, “Then she needs to look confused before she says anything.”
The footage showed Dr. Lane changing labels on medication bottles.
It showed Caroline adding crushed tablets to Margaret’s tea.
On the final night, Margaret refused the drink.
Caroline held the cup to her mouth.
The camera angle did not show every movement, but the audio captured coughing, a chair falling, and Victor saying:
“That dose is too high.”
Caroline replied:
“It has to look accidental.”
Margaret was found unconscious the next morning.
Her death was ruled an accidental overdose because Dr. Lane confirmed she had confused her prescriptions.
The study fire began hours later.
Victor had attempted to destroy the camera and records.
The clock survived because firefighters moved it before the ceiling collapsed.
Thomas watched only once.
Emma could not watch at all.
Margaret’s death was no longer a family tragedy surrounded by unanswered questions.
It was a homicide investigation.
Caroline’s assault in the bedroom had not been an isolated loss of temper.
It belonged to a pattern of using medication, documents, and private spaces to erase anyone who threatened her control.
The camera footage established that Margaret remained conscious for at least eleven minutes after the overdose began.
She tried to reach the desk phone.
Caroline moved it away.
Victor paced near the doorway, repeating that they should call an ambulance. Caroline told him emergency treatment would reveal the medication mismatch and destroy all of them.
Thomas left the viewing room and was sick in the courthouse bathroom.
When he returned, Emma did not ask him to continue watching.
“I saw enough,” she said.
They sat in separate chairs beneath fluorescent lights.
Margaret’s death belonged to both of them differently. Thomas had lost a mother. Emma had lost the only adult who understood the machinery closing around her.
Neither grief ranked above the other.
Detective Ortiz entered only when they signaled.
