Fire Above the River

Chapter 10 - Fire Above the River

The archive fire began at 2:17 in the morning.

Bellamy Medical’s original research building stood above the river, connected to the city by an elevated service road. A guard smelled smoke near Evelyn’s laboratory and triggered the alarm.

Nora was reviewing documents in a secure office two floors above.

Sprinklers failed in the archive wing.

Security doors locked automatically.

The design resembled the system used at the Vale hospital data center—controlled remotely from a private administrator account.

Rosa led Nora through the service stairwell while firefighters entered below. Victor refused to leave until a guard physically pulled him from the corridor.

Everyone escaped.

The archive burned.

For one hour, Nora believed Evelyn’s notebooks, videos, and patient files were gone.

Then Naomi reminded her that the originals had been distributed after the emerald discovery. Copies existed with the court, federal regulators, two universities, and the patient-data council.

No single room could erase the truth again.

Investigators found accelerant and a cloned access card registered to Marcus Vale, Adrian’s cousin and former security chief. Cameras captured him entering before midnight.

Marcus was arrested at a private airfield.

His phone contained a message from Adrian’s jail tablet account:

MAKE THE OLD LAB DISAPPEAR BEFORE PIKE TALKS.

Adrian claimed his account had been hacked.

Digital logs showed facial verification.

Prosecutors added arson conspiracy, witness intimidation, and attempted destruction of evidence.

The fire damaged the building but not the case.

It also exposed another danger.

The locked doors could have killed employees and Nora. Adrian described the plan as document destruction, but he accepted human risk as part of the method.

At the hospital, Victor received treatment for smoke inhalation.

Nora sat beside him.

“You ran back toward the archive.”

“Your mother’s work was inside.”

“Copies were safe.”

“I did not know.”

“You still decided paper mattered more than leaving.”

Victor heard Evelyn inside the criticism.

He had spent his life treating Bellamy Medical as something worth personal sacrifice. Evelyn died challenging the belief that the institution justified every cost.

“I was wrong,” he said.

Nora looked at him.

No explanation followed.

The simplicity mattered.

The burned wing was not restored as a private archive. Bellamy rebuilt it as the Evelyn Bellamy Center for Consent and Medical Accountability. Glass walls replaced hidden corridors. Files were distributed and independently controlled.

The old laboratory outline remained visible in the floor.

A plaque listed the fire as an attempted crime, not a tragic accident.

Adrian’s message appeared in the public court record.

The flames he ordered were supposed to make evidence disappear.

Instead, they proved that even after arrest, he believed destruction remained available to him.

The case no longer concerned a single slap.

It concerned a family system that treated every locked door, medical file, marriage, and company as a tool for controlling who could speak.
