Celeste Makes a Mistake

Chapter 04 - Celeste Makes a Mistake

Celeste Arden had been raised to understand the value of timing.

A tear at the right dinner could soften a board member. A laugh beside the right camera could repair a scandal. A cruel word, if delivered quietly enough, could ruin a woman without staining your own gloves.

But the locket was not part of her timing.

It lay open in Ethan’s palm, and every second he stared at the baby’s photograph was a second Celeste felt her future slipping.

She turned toward the guests and forced a wounded smile. “Surely we are not allowing a servant to interrupt an engagement gala with a piece of costume jewelry.”

Lily rose slowly from the floor. Her knee throbbed where it had struck marble, but she did not reach for anyone’s help.

“My son is not costume jewelry.”

A murmur went through the room.

Celeste’s eyes flashed. “Your son?”

“Our son,” Lily said, looking at Ethan.

Ethan closed his fingers around the locket. The gesture was small, but Celeste saw what it meant. He was protecting it.

Protecting her.

Not Celeste. Lily.

Vivian moved with the calm of a woman who had ended greater disasters. “Ethan, you are emotional. This girl has used your grief. She knew about the accident. She knew there had been a pregnancy. Anyone could have placed a photograph inside that locket.”

“And the engraving?” Ethan asked.

“Forged.”

“My handwriting?”

Vivian’s face hardened. “You were injured. You are vulnerable.”

For years, those words had worked. Tonight they sounded like a leash.

Ethan turned to Lily. “Where is he?”

Lily’s breath hitched. She had imagined this question in a thousand ways. In some versions, Ethan asked gently. In others, he accused. In the worst versions, he laughed.

But this Ethan looked shattered, and the sight nearly undid her.

“Safe,” she said.

Vivian seized on it. “Convenient.”

Lily looked at her then, really looked, and saw the woman who had stood over her clinic bed. The same pearls. The same smooth cruelty. A queen confident the castle walls still obeyed her.

“You hid him,” Lily said. “You hid my baby, and then you told Ethan I sold him.”

Several guests gasped.

Celeste stepped closer, voice low enough for only Lily to hear. “Stop before you lose what little you have left.”

Lily should have been afraid.

She was. Fear lived in her bones. It sat beside every memory of collection notices, fever nights, and Noah asking why other children had grandfathers. But fear was no longer bigger than the truth.

“Say that louder,” Lily whispered.

Celeste’s smile twitched.

“What?”

“You liked shouting when I was on the floor.”

A phone lifted in the crowd. Then another. Celeste saw the small screens and straightened, trapped inside the image she had made for herself.

Ethan noticed the phones too. His voice cut through the room.

“No one leaves.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed. “You do not give orders in my house.”

Ethan looked up at the chandeliers, the balcony, the marble under Lily’s feet.

“No,” he said. “But if Lily is telling the truth, it was never your house to use like this.”

That was when Celeste made her mistake.

She laughed.

Not softly. Not convincingly. A sharp, panicked sound that sliced through the silence.

“For God’s sake, Ethan. Even if the child exists, do you know what marrying her would do to your name?”

Ethan went still.

Celeste realized too late what she had confessed.

Even if the child exists.

Lily heard it.

May you like

Vivian heard it.

And Ethan, finally, heard everything.
