Chapter 7 - THE MAID IN THE BOARDROOM

Daniel locked Saint Agnes in less than thirty seconds.

Two security men checked the side alley.

Another crossed the sanctuary.

A fourth went to the roof access.

Sarah stood beside the parish desk staring at the photograph on her phone.

It had been taken from across the street.

She could see herself entering the church.

Anthony behind her.

Luca two steps ahead.

The message made her neck hurt all over again.

YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT YOUR COLLAR BUTTONED.

Luca held out his hand.

“May I?”

Sarah gave him the phone.

He forwarded the message to Daniel, then handed it back.

“Do you recognize the number?”

“No.”

“Anyone outside Vanessa who knows what happened to your neck?”

“Mrs. Carter. Dr. Harris. The people at dinner.”

“Camilla Bellini could have heard.”

Anthony looked toward the windows.

“Or Vanessa told her.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

Daniel returned.

“No one outside now. Camera across the street caught a gray sedan leaving east.”

“Plate?”

“Covered.”

Sister Catherine folded her arms.

“You people bring very complicated mornings.”

Anthony almost smiled.

Luca did not.

He looked at Sarah.

“You’re not going home.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Sir, I can’t just disappear from my apartment.”

“I’m not asking you to disappear.”

“It sounds like it.”

He paused.

“You’re right.”

That surprised her.

Luca continued.

“I’m asking you to stay somewhere secure until we identify who sent that message.”

Sarah looked at the threat again.

“My father expects me to call tonight.”

“Call him.”

“He’ll ask questions.”

“Tell him you’re staying with a friend.”

She gave Luca a look.

“I don’t have many friends with armed security.”

Anthony coughed into his fist.

Despite everything, Sarah almost laughed.

Luca’s mouth moved slightly.

Then Daniel stepped back into the room.

“Boss, we have a bigger problem.”

He put a tablet on the desk.

The Moretti board had received an emergency notice at 6:18 a.m.

MEETING — 10:00 A.M.

Purpose:

Continuity Trust activation review.

Luca stared at the screen.

“I didn’t call this.”

Daniel scrolled.

“Marco did.”

Anthony leaned over.

“Can he?”

“He is still listed as alternate family director.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

The notice included an attachment.

A medical incapacity declaration.

Sarah frowned.

“What is that?”

Daniel opened it.

The document claimed Luca had demonstrated impaired judgment and emotional instability during the previous twelve hours.

Anthony laughed in disbelief.

“They’re trying to remove him?”

“Temporarily,” Daniel said.

“Based on what?”

“Three board affidavits.”

Luca looked at the names.

Two were old directors loyal to Marco.

The third made him stop.

Dr. Leonard Price.

His family physician.

“I haven’t seen Price in six months.”

Daniel opened the signature metadata.

“Filed at 5:52 this morning.”

Anthony swore.

Sarah stared.

“Can they do that without examining you?”

“No,” Luca said.

“Then why would a doctor sign it?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Because someone thinks the board will accept the paper before asking the question.”

Luca looked at Sarah.

The sentence echoed something she had said about the hotel? No. Different story. Still, it fit.

People with power often depended on everyone else assuming the paperwork was real.

Luca straightened.

“We attend.”

Anthony nodded.

“I’m coming.”

Luca looked at him.

“As what?”

That hurt.

Anthony accepted it.

“As the man whose forged signature is on their amendment.”

Luca considered.

Then nodded.

Sarah picked up her coat.

“You’re not coming,” Luca said.

She stopped.

“You just told me not to go home.”

“To the board meeting.”

“Why?”

“Because this is not your fight.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Vanessa grabbed my neck because I heard about this.”

“That does not mean you owe me more.”

“I know.”

Her voice steadied.

“But the incapacity paper says your judgment changed during the last twelve hours.”

Luca waited.

Sarah continued.

“Vanessa is going to say you became irrational after listening to a maid.”

Anthony looked at her.

Daniel did too.

She pointed at the board notice.

“If I’m not there, they get to describe what happened to me without me.”

Luca’s expression changed.

Sarah swallowed.

“I’m tired of other people explaining my bruises.”

Silence.

Then Luca nodded.

“Your choice.”

At 9:54 a.m., Sarah entered the Moretti Logistics boardroom wearing the same black housekeeping dress she had worn at dinner.

Mrs. Carter had offered to find her something else.

Sarah refused.

She wanted Vanessa to see the collar.

Not because she was ashamed anymore.

Because Vanessa had made it evidence.

Twelve directors sat around a walnut table.

Marco occupied Luca’s chair.

Vanessa sat beside him in cream silk.

Her eyes went straight to Sarah.

Then Anthony.

Then Luca.

The room changed.

Marco stood.

“This is a private corporate meeting.”

Luca closed the door behind him.

“Then stop inviting my fiancée.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Marco ignored her.

“You are under review.”

Luca pulled out the chair opposite him.

“Review me.”

A lawyer cleared his throat.

“Mr. Moretti, there are concerns about decisions made under emotional distress.”

“Name one.”

“The confrontation at your engagement dinner.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“She assaulted an employee.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No. Sarah injured herself and invented a story after being corrected.”

Sarah felt her stomach turn.

The lawyer looked at her.

“Ms. Collins?”

She stood.

“My name is Sarah Collins.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

Sarah unbuttoned the top of her collar.

The bruises had darkened overnight.

Several directors looked away.

“I did not catch my neck on a coat hook.”

She described the dressing room.

Anthony’s jacket on the floor.

Vanessa asking how much she had heard.

The hand grabbing her collar.

The wardrobe door.

The threat to fire her.

She did not dramatize.

She did not cry.

She just told the truth.

When she finished, the boardroom was silent.

Marco leaned back.

“A housekeeper’s accusation is not medical evidence.”

Sarah looked at him.

“No.”

Then she placed Dr. Harris’s written examination on the table.

“This is.”

Daniel slid copies toward every director.

The report documented finger-pattern bruising inconsistent with a coat hook.

Vanessa’s face changed.

The lawyer turned toward Anthony.

“Mr. Marino?”

Anthony stood.

“I was there.”

Vanessa stared at him.

He did not look away.

“I watched her grab Sarah. I did nothing.”

Sarah heard the shame in his voice.

Anthony continued.

“I was also having an affair with Vanessa Bellini.”

The room erupted.

Marco struck the table.

“This has nothing to do with the trust.”

“It has everything to do with the forged signature you filed.”

Anthony placed the original brass key on the table.

Then Daniel distributed copies of the A-17 records.

Black ledger.

Antonio’s letter.

Enzo’s statement.

The fake continuity amendment.

The canceled repair order.

Directors stopped whispering.

Marco’s face hardened.

“You stole private family records.”

Luca sat down.

“They were mine.”

Vanessa pushed back her chair.

“This is exactly what I warned you about. Luca is paranoid, vindictive, and being manipulated by staff.”

Sarah looked at her.

Vanessa smiled.

“Do you really think he cares about you? You’re useful because you overheard something.”

Luca’s expression changed.

Sarah answered before he could.

“Maybe.”

The room went quiet.

Sarah looked directly at Vanessa.

“But being useful is different from being owned.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Sarah continued.

“You thought my paycheck meant you could decide what I saw, what I said, and what happened to my body.”

She buttoned her collar again.

“You were wrong.”

One of the older directors looked at Luca.

“What about the incapacity declaration?”

Daniel placed a phone on speaker.

Dr. Leonard Price’s voice came through.

“I did not sign that document.”

Marco went still.

The lawyer frowned.

“Doctor, your signature appears on it.”

“It was copied from an annual physical form.”

Daniel displayed the metadata.

The file had been created on a laptop registered to Bellini Holdings.

Vanessa looked at Marco.

Marco looked at her.

For the first time, their alliance looked less like a partnership than two people searching for someone to blame.

Then the boardroom door opened.

A woman walked in.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Black gloves.

Anthony’s face went white.

Sarah recognized her from the old Bellini photograph.

Camilla Bellini.

She looked at Vanessa first.

Then Marco.

Finally Luca.

“I believe,” she said, “you have been looking for the person who ordered the work on your father’s car.”

Luca stood.

Camilla removed one glove.

A long burn scar crossed her palm.

“I did.”

Nobody breathed.

Then she looked at Marco.

“But I was not trying to kill Antonio Moretti.”

Her eyes hardened.

“I was trying to stop Marco from killing Enzo.”

Marco laughed.

“That is convenient.”

She looked at Luca.

“Your father’s car was not supposed to leave the garage that night. I paid Frank to damage the brake line that Antonio would notice before driving.”

Frank’s refusal suddenly made sense.

Camilla continued.

“When he refused, Marco replaced the line himself.”

Luca stared.

“Why stop my father?”

“Because Antonio planned to meet Enzo at the rail yard.”

“So?”

Camilla’s face tightened.

“Marco had arranged men there.”

Anthony stopped breathing.

“To do what?”

May you like

Camilla looked at him.

“To make Enzo disappear and leave your father alive to believe his best friend had run.”
