Chapter 5 - THE WITNESS IN MILWAUKEE

Evelyn Russo lived in a brick assisted-living residence outside Milwaukee, two hours from Lake Geneva.

By the time Luca reached it, the sky had turned the color of steel.

Emma had expected him to send her back to Chicago after the chapel.

Instead, he waited beside the car until Clara helped her settle in the rear seat.

“You could have stayed,” he said.

Emma adjusted Marco’s folder.

“You keep saying that before taking me somewhere worse.”

Clara laughed for the first time all day.

Luca almost did.

Then he looked toward Vittorio’s car.

“Vanessa is staying at Lake Geneva.”

Emma glanced behind them.

“She agreed?”

“No.”

That answer was enough.

Daniel remained with the blue box while another security vehicle followed Luca north.

At the residence, a receptionist led them to a private sunroom overlooking a frozen garden.

Evelyn Russo sat beside the window in a lavender cardigan.

She was eighty-three.

Her silver hair was cut short.

A small cross hung at her throat.

Luca recognized it immediately.

The same silver cross from the edge of the childhood memory he had never trusted.

Evelyn looked at him for a long time.

Then she smiled.

“You still frown before asking questions.”

Luca stopped.

Clara covered her mouth.

“Evelyn.”

The old women crossed the room toward each other.

No one spoke while they embraced.

Emma looked away, suddenly feeling like an intruder.

Evelyn noticed.

“You’re Emma.”

Emma’s head lifted.

“How do you know my name?”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

“Because Vanessa told me.”

Luca became completely still.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

The room changed.

Clara sat beside Evelyn.

“She came here?”

“Twice.”

Luca’s voice lowered.

“She told me she had never seen you.”

Evelyn gave a tired laugh.

“Then she lies more easily than her grandfather did.”

Emma felt the hairs rise along her arms.

“What did she want?”

Evelyn looked at Marco’s folder.

“First, she wanted to know whether Rosa’s declaration still existed.”

“And the second time?” Luca asked.

“She wanted to know what Emma Reed had found at the estate.”

Emma stared.

“I hadn’t found anything three weeks ago.”

“No.”

Evelyn touched the cross at her throat.

“But apparently Vanessa expected you might.”

Before Luca could answer, voices sounded in the corridor.

Daniel stepped into the doorway.

His expression was grim.

“Boss.”

Luca turned.

Vanessa appeared behind him.

White coat.

Perfect hair.

No apology.

“I told security I’m your fiancée.”

Luca stared at her.

“I told you to stay at Lake Geneva.”

“And I decided not to be excluded from a conversation about my family.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Which family?”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

Emma could almost feel the question strike.

She entered the sunroom.

“Mrs. Russo.”

“Miss Bellini.”

“You look well.”

“You look worried.”

Clara murmured, “I have missed you.”

Vanessa ignored her.

Then her eyes moved to Emma.

“You again.”

Emma did not answer.

Vanessa turned to Luca.

“Surely she doesn’t need to be present for this.”

Evelyn spoke before he could.

“She does.”

Vanessa looked at the old woman.

“She is an employee.”

“So was I.”

The words landed cleanly.

Evelyn leaned back.

“People like your family have always mistaken payroll for ownership.”

Emma felt something inside her straighten.

Vanessa smiled.

“Very dramatic.”

“No. Dramatic is threatening a loyal manager because he kept records you failed to buy.”

Luca looked at Evelyn.

“How do you know about Marco’s letters?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Vanessa told me she would make sure the girl stopped asking questions.”

Vanessa laughed.

“That is not what I said.”

“You said, ‘She won’t be a problem after the wedding.’”

Silence.

Emma looked at Luca.

His face had gone cold.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You are twisting a private conversation.”

“Then untwist it.”

Evelyn’s voice remained calm.

“What did you mean?”

Vanessa did not answer.

Luca stepped closer.

“You visited Evelyn three weeks ago. You knew her name. You knew about the declaration. You knew Marco had Michael’s papers. Yet last night you told me you recognized nobody in the photograph.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

“From this.”

She gestured at the room.

“Old scandals. Sick people. Family shame.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

Emma saw Luca notice the words.

Family shame.

He glanced toward Clara.

Then back at Evelyn.

“My aunt said Sofia’s birth certificate does not tell the truth.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Vanessa went very still.

Luca saw that too.

“You knew.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“Yes, she did.”

Vanessa turned on her.

“You promised.”

Evelyn’s expression sharpened.

“I promised a frightened twenty-three-year-old man thirty-one years ago. I promised Rosa. I promised Michael. I never promised you.”

Emma’s heartbeat accelerated.

Luca sat opposite Evelyn.

“Tell me.”

Clara reached for Evelyn’s hand.

The old nurse looked at Vittorio’s empty chair as though he were present anyway.

“I loved Vittorio Bellini.”

Luca blinked.

Evelyn continued.

“Before your father’s crash. Before Rosa found the forged guarantees. Vittorio was nineteen. I was twenty-four.”

Clara whispered, “Evelyn.”

“You never knew.”

“No.”

“No one did.”

Vanessa’s face had lost color.

Evelyn touched the silver cross.

“When Vittorio’s father learned about us, he ended it. He told me his son would marry someone useful.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“And Sofia?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“She was born twenty-two months after the crash.”

Emma stopped breathing.

Luca stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“My mother gave birth to her.”

“Your mother raised her.”

The room became silent.

Vanessa sat down as though her knees had failed.

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“I was Sofia’s biological mother.”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked sick.

Luca whispered, “And Vittorio?”

Evelyn nodded.

“He was her father.”

Clara began to cry.

Luca stood and walked to the window.

For several seconds he said nothing.

His younger sister.

The girl whose scraped knees he had bandaged.

The teenager he had taught to drive.

The woman who had stopped answering his calls after Vanessa entered his life.

Not his blood sister.

And still, somehow, entirely his sister.

He turned.

“Why did my parents take her?”

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“Domenico threatened to have my child taken from me. Rosa knew what he was capable of after the attack on Michael. She and Michael offered Sofia their name.”

“Did Vittorio agree?”

“He begged me to accept.”

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“That is a lie.”

Everyone looked at her.

“My father would have told me.”

Evelyn’s sadness became almost pity.

“Would he?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Luca’s voice was quiet.

“Sofia is your half-sister.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No.”

“She is.”

“No.”

Emma had never seen Vanessa frightened by another person’s pain before.

Only by her own loss of control.

Now both seemed to meet.

Evelyn looked at her.

“You came here because you already suspected.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I came because my father said you were blackmailing him.”

“I asked him to tell Sofia the truth.”

“You threatened our family.”

“I tried to return a stolen history.”

Vanessa turned to Luca.

“Do you understand what happens if Sofia learns this? The press will destroy us.”

Emma almost laughed at the word us.

Luca did not.

“What happens is that my sister learns who her parents are.”

“She is not your sister.”

The sentence cracked through the room.

Luca stared at Vanessa.

Emma saw the instant Vanessa realized she had made another mistake.

His voice lowered.

“Say that again.”

She looked away.

Evelyn spoke softly.

“Blood made Vittorio her father. Love made Rosa and Michael her parents. Neither fact erases the other.”

Luca sat again.

“What did Vanessa want from you three weeks ago?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Sofia’s original birth certificate.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.

Luca looked at his fiancée.

“Why?”

“I didn’t take it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Evelyn reached into a drawer beside her chair.

It was empty.

Her face changed.

Clara leaned forward.

“What?”

“The certificate.”

Evelyn searched another drawer.

Then a small document case.

Nothing.

Vanessa moved toward the door.

Daniel blocked it.

Luca watched her.

“You said you didn’t take it.”

“I didn’t.”

Evelyn’s hands began to shake.

“I kept it here.”

“When did you last see it?”

“This morning.”

Emma looked toward the corridor.

A nurse had passed twice since they arrived.

Daniel immediately called the front desk and requested security footage.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course. Search everyone. Perhaps Emma stole this too.”

The words hit harder because they returned to the same old weapon.

Poor girl.

Employee.

Convenient suspect.

Emma stood. “You don’t get to do that again.”

Vanessa blinked.

“I was afraid yesterday,” Emma said. “I’m not now.”

Daniel’s phone rang.

He checked the hallway footage.

At 9:17 that morning, Vittorio Bellini had entered Evelyn’s room alone.

Eleven minutes later, he left carrying her document case.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“Where is your father?”

Daniel checked another alert.

“Airport security stopped his car.”

Vanessa exhaled.

Daniel shook his head.

“Vittorio wasn’t inside.”

He turned the screen around.

Sofia Moretti sat in the passenger seat.

May you like

And Evelyn’s missing document case rested on her lap.

Nobody in the room spoke afterward.
