Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE DOMINIC ALMOST GAVE AWAY

Cross Capital did not collapse when Friday passed without Dominic’s signature.

That surprised Madeline.

Maybe everyone.

The firm issued a short statement:

Transaction review ongoing.

No material change to operations.

No panic.

No bank run.

No ruined employees.

One postponed signature.

The world continued.

That mattered.

Madeline had spent days treating Friday like a cliff.

It was a calendar.

Cross’s lenders wanted answers.

They accepted delay.

At a cost.

Commitment fees continued.

A hotel acquisition might slip.

Painful.

Not catastrophic.

Fear had inflated urgency again.

Then Dominic reviewed the restatement he had almost signed.

All 112 pages.

With Claire Hanley.

Not Victor.

Clause by clause.

Schedule Red acknowledgment.

Care property transfer.

Cross-Russo Holdings governance.

Madeline would have received no personal ownership of the protected reserve.

Important.

This was not a simple theft plan.

Cross Capital would have managed pooled assets and gained financing capacity.

The value to Madeline’s family came through fees, leverage, and strategic control.

Still significant.

But not “steal thirty-one million.”

That distinction mattered.

Then one clause bothered Dominic more than the rest.
