Chapter 07 - The Board Meeting in the Gym
The Westbridge board expected a private meeting.
Elias requested the gymnasium.
Parents, students, former factory workers, and reporters filled the bleachers. The original Carter Trust required major land decisions to be discussed before the community. Victor’s board had ignored that rule for years.
Victor Hale entered through the side door with four attorneys.
He was handsome, silver-haired, and calm enough to make anger around him look unreasonable. Mason followed in a dark suit, his parking-lot charges still pending.
Mason did not look at Lily.
Victor opened with a warning.
Canceling the riverfront sale would cost Westbridge forty million dollars. The school’s equipment was outdated. Enrollment was falling. Only Hale Infrastructure could save it.
Naomi displayed the scholarship accounts.
Millions had been diverted.
Victor called them administrative partnerships.
Paige Monroe testified that ghost students funded board companies. Principal Whitmore invoked her right to remain silent.
Then Elias approached the microphone.
He wore the same coveralls from the rain.
Victor smiled.
“You always did love theater.”
Elias unzipped the front enough to show the scars.
“No. Theater is calling chained exits an electrical accident.”
The gym quieted.
Elias played the factory access logs, Anna’s crash video, and Mason’s messages. He showed the original deed proving the Carter Trust owned the land.
Victor’s attorneys challenged every item.
The trust was outdated.
The video was incomplete.
The scholarship transfers were lawful.
Mason’s messages were teenage exaggeration.
Then Samuel Reed entered in a wheelchair beside a court-appointed advocate.
Victor’s face changed.
Samuel testified that Victor threatened his grandchildren before the factory case. Years later, when Anna found the brake invoice, Samuel tried to report it. Victor used a paid doctor to declare him incompetent and seized his records.
The same doctor signed evaluations for three other witnesses.
Students in the bleachers began whispering.
A senior named Malik Turner stood.
“My scholarship was canceled too.”
Then another student.
And another.
Twenty-seven students had been told funds disappeared because of poor grades. Several had perfect records.
The board’s authority began collapsing in public.
Victor leaned toward Elias.
“You expose everything and the school closes.”
Elias answered into the microphone.
“The school has land, unpaid licensing income, and stolen scholarship money subject to recovery. It does not need you. It needs an audit.”
Naomi filed an emergency motion transferring governance to the employee-and-community council named in the original trust.
The judge approved temporary control before the meeting ended.
Victor was removed as chairman.
Principal Whitmore was suspended.
Security guards escorted Mason from the gym after Detective Ortiz served an arrest warrant for conspiracy and assault.
Students watched the boy who had walked across the parking lot like an owner leave through a side door.
Outside, Victor stopped beside Elias.
“You think this ends with paperwork?”
“No.”
“What do you think ends it?”
“People who were afraid of you discovering they are standing in the same room.”
Victor looked toward the gym doors.
Former employees, parents, teachers, and students were filing out together.
