Arthur Bellamy had expected Claire’s call for nearly a year.
He had noticed irregularities in the quarterly reports, but each time he asked for supporting documents, Ethan’s office delayed. Claire, still trying to preserve the marriage, had asked Arthur not to confront him publicly until she understood whether the discrepancies were mistakes or crimes.
Arthur disagreed but respected her instruction.
Quietly, he began building a file.
The forged signatures from Zurich matched authorizations used to move twelve million dollars into Phoenix Meridian. Two hotels had been pledged as collateral without trustee approval. A historic property in Savannah was scheduled for sale to a buyer linked to Vanessa’s investment firm.
Worst of all, Ethan had tried to dissolve the foundation established by Claire’s mother. Its main building housed a legal clinic and temporary apartments for women leaving abusive homes.
He planned to convert it into a luxury members’ club.
Claire learned of that plan three days before the confrontation in the foyer.
She had spent those days reviewing evidence, hoping there was some explanation that did not require her to admit what Ethan had become. The slap removed the final doubt.
Arthur showed Ethan a temporary court order preserving all trust assets. He explained that law enforcement had been notified of suspected fraud, though no arrest would occur until investigators reviewed the accounts.
Ethan laughed too loudly.
He said Arthur was an aging lawyer protecting a spoiled heiress. He claimed the transfers were part of legitimate restructuring and that Claire had approved them verbally.
Arthur opened another section of the file.
Inside were emails between Ethan and Vanessa discussing how to “neutralize the beneficiary” before the next board vote. One message suggested portraying Claire as mentally unstable. Another proposed obtaining a medical declaration that would transfer control of the trust to Ethan.
Vanessa stepped backward.
She had written those words.
Claire read the printed messages without changing expression. The emotional wound was deeper than the bruise, but she refused to let Ethan watch it open.
“Did you plan to have me declared incompetent?” she asked.
Ethan said nothing.
Arthur closed the folder.
“You mistook Mrs. Whitmore’s restraint for weakness,” he said. “That error is now documented.”
