Chapter 7 - THE WAITRESS BEFORE THE FAMILY BOARD

The De Luca family board met on the forty-second floor of a building Elena had only seen from the street.
She arrived in the same black slacks she wore to work because she refused Luca’s offer to stop for clothes.
“I’m a waitress,” she said. “If that embarrasses anybody in there, they can survive it.”
Matteo looked at her.
“It doesn’t embarrass me.”
She believed him.
That frightened her in a different way.
Inside the boardroom, Adrian sat at the far end of a polished table with six directors and two lawyers.
A screen displayed one title.
TEMPORARY GOVERNANCE ACTION.
Adrian’s attorney stood.
“Miss Rossi should not be present.”
Elena pulled out a chair.
“Then you should have planned a crime that didn’t involve me.”
Nobody spoke.
Matteo sat beside her.
Adrian stared at the paternity folder in Luca’s hand.
“You actually did it.”
Elena looked at him.
“You actually made it necessary.”
The first lawyer began with medical language.
Matteo interrupted.
“I was never admitted to a hospital.”
“The filing was prepared based on a credible concern.”
“Prepared forty-three minutes before I ate dinner.”
Several directors looked toward Adrian.
He folded his hands.
“My office received a warning that someone intended to harm you.”
“And you didn’t call me?”
“I didn’t know whether it was credible.”
“But it was credible enough to prepare papers giving you my authority.”
Adrian’s mouth tightened.
The board secretary cleared his throat.
“We also need to address the Bellavita sale.”
Elena felt Adrian’s attention sharpen.
Luca placed the trust copy on the table.
The secretary read the succession clause twice.
Then he looked at Elena.
“Miss Rossi, do you intend to assert any ownership claim?”
“No.”
Adrian leaned back.
“There. Then this is irrelevant.”
Elena continued.
“I intend to assert my right to be notified before you sell the building where somebody just tried to frame me for poisoning my father.”
The word father left the room silent.
Matteo looked down.
Not ashamed.
Overwhelmed.
Adrian recovered first.
“Convenient.”
Elena turned toward him.
“What is?”
“That one night turns a waitress into a De Luca heir.”
“I said I don’t want your money.”
“People say many things before lawyers explain numbers.”
Matteo’s chair moved.
Elena put one hand on his sleeve.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
She looked at Adrian.
“My mother spent twenty-five years making sure I grew up outside this room. If she wanted the money, she had plenty of chances to come back and ask for it.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Elena saw it.
“So that’s what bothers you,” she said. “She didn’t come back.”
Adrian laughed.
“You know nothing about her.”
“I know she wrote to Matteo and you hid the letters.”
The directors shifted.
Adrian’s attorney objected.
Elena ignored him.
“I know she recorded that you found her after I was born. I know your driver was behind Marco in the alley. I know the special dish was ordered through a code you knew. And I know your board papers expected Matteo to collapse before he took the first bite.”
One director turned toward Adrian.
“Is any of that false?”
Adrian looked at his lawyer.
The lawyer answered instead.
“These are unverified allegations.”
The door opened.
Luca wheeled in a monitor.
Marco Santori appeared by video from his hospital room.
His face was bruised, but his voice was steady.
“I can verify my part.”
The board listened while Marco described Adrian’s visit, the old recipe, the special ticket, and the packet passed through a fake vendor.
Then Rosa Bianchi appeared by video.
She described Adrian coming to her apartment in 2004 looking for Isabella and Elena.
Adrian’s face grew harder with every sentence.
When Rosa finished, his attorney stood.
“We have documents too.”
He placed a photocopy on the table.
A confession signed by Isabella Rossi.
Elena stared at it.
The statement claimed Isabella had stolen money from Bellavita and fabricated a pregnancy story to pressure Matteo.
Adrian spoke softly.
“This is what Father had.”
Matteo read it.
His face became unreadable.
Elena took the page.
For a moment, she felt twelve years old again, sitting at a kitchen table while Isabella signed a school form.
Then she noticed the date.
1999.
And the footer.
A legal-services company name printed in tiny gray letters.
She looked at Luca.
“Can you check when this company existed?”
Adrian’s attorney frowned.
“That is irrelevant.”
“Then it won’t hurt.”
Luca searched.
Thirty seconds later, he turned the laptop around.
The legal-services company had been incorporated in 2007.
Eight years after Isabella supposedly signed the confession on its letterhead.
The room went silent.
Elena slid the paper toward Adrian.
“My mother may have been poor,” she said. “She was not a time traveler.”
One director actually laughed.
Adrian did not.
The board secretary picked up the forged confession.
“Meeting adjourned pending forensic review.”
Adrian stood.
Matteo remained seated.
The sale was frozen.
The temporary-control motion was frozen.
And for the first time since the dinner, Adrian looked afraid of something other than exposure.
He looked afraid of time.
As security moved closer, he turned to Elena.
“You think this ends with the board?”
“No.”
“It ends under Bellavita.”
Elena frowned.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Ask your mother’s recipe why she wrote Table Twelve twice.”

Matteo had spent years trusting the version he was given, but now Elena entered the boardroom as a waitress and refused to be dressed into a different identity. The silence that followed came from the same realization: Adrian tried to turn her paternity into a greed accusation. What looked small on paper became dangerous in context because Elena rejected any ownership claim while insisting on notice rights tied to Bellavita. Elena kept returning to one detail: Marco testified from the hospital about the special ticket and fake vendor. For Matteo, the meaning was unavoidable because Rosa testified about Adrian searching for Isabella and Elena years earlier. Luca wrote the point down carefully: Adrian produced a supposed confession from Isabella. No one in the room could dismiss the fact that the confession used letterhead from a company created eight years after its stated date. The detail mattered for a simple reason: the board froze both Adrian's control motion and the Bellavita property sale. Every explanation Adrian offered became harder to believe once they remembered that Adrian hinted that the real evidence was physically hidden under Bellavita. Elena did not need a family name to understand why the phrase Table Twelve appeared again in Isabella's recipe code. Elena let the silence stand because nobody could repair it.
