Chapter 05 - Locker Sixty
State investigators entered the warehouse at dawn.
Samuel, Nora, and Bear waited behind the police line while technicians opened the rusted security door.
Locker 60 stood at the end of a dark corridor.
The clay key turned.
Inside were four filing boxes, a damaged laptop, children’s medical equipment still wrapped in plastic, and a framed photograph of Michael Vale holding his two daughters.
One box contained original Bright Tomorrow ledgers.
Another held copies of emails Michael sent Richard before the fire.
You are diverting patient funds through Vale Consulting.
Return the equipment before the board meeting.
If anything happens to me, Nora has the supplier records.
The final email had never been sent.
Investigators found accelerant residue on the damaged laptop and warehouse maintenance reports showing the fire alarm had been disabled on the night Michael died.
Richard had rebuilt the charity using his brother’s public reputation while blaming the dead man for the theft.
The unopened equipment explained the repeating publicity photographs. Bright Tomorrow moved the same monitors, wheelchairs, and therapy devices between hospitals for donor events, then returned everything to storage.
Children posed beside machines they never received.
At the bottom of the final box, Bear found Lucy’s missing tablet.
The screen was cracked but the memory card remained.
How had it reached Michael’s locker?
Security footage from the warehouse provided the answer.
Carter Vale entered with his father two weeks before Lucy died. Carter carried the tablet.
Richard opened Locker 60 and threw it inside, unaware Nora still possessed the key.
The video also captured their argument.
Carter asked why they could not simply destroy the device.
Richard answered:
“Because if the cloud copy exists, destroying it proves panic. We keep it hidden until the girl is gone.”
Bear stepped away from the monitor.
Lucy’s cancer had already reached its final stage. Richard did not cause her illness.
He had watched the calendar of a dying child and treated her death as a convenient deadline.
Carter looked frightened in the video.
He still obeyed.
The teenager’s panic in Willow & Thread now made sense.
He knew exactly where the tablet had been hidden and exactly what the pink bracelet might reveal.
The warehouse also contained unopened boxes of friendship-bracelet kits purchased through the charity.
Richard’s reports claimed hundreds had been distributed to pediatric wards as therapeutic activities.
Most remained sealed.
Lucy had bought many of her own supplies with money Bear gave her from motorcycle repair jobs.
The discovery revealed something small but revealing: even the cheerful craft program used in fundraising had been mostly fictional.
