Bringing Everything Back Inside

Chapter 12 - Bringing Everything Back Inside

After the police left, Claire began gathering her clothes.

Margaret told her to wait for help.

Claire picked up the quilt anyway.

Margaret lifted one wet sleeve from the driveway.

Vanessa remained near the porch.

“I can help,” she said.

Claire looked at her.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

That answer was at least honest.

Claire handed her the empty suitcase.

They worked without speaking.

Vanessa gathered shoes and folded soaked clothing. Margaret carried smaller items. Claire brought the quilt inside and spread it across the laundry-room table.

Claire stood in the hallway and felt suddenly tired.

Margaret touched her arm.

Claire looked toward the front door.

“Yes,” she said. “I do.”
