The city's most luxurious bakery smelled of fresh pastries, vanilla cream, and wealth. Crystal display cases sparkled beneath golden lights while wealthy customers browsed desserts that cost more than some families spent on food in a week.
Then the doors opened.
A small boy named Mateo stepped inside.
His clothes were worn.
His shoes were scuffed.
And in his trembling hands were a few carefully counted coins.
Mateo approached the counter quietly.
"I'd like a piece of bread, please."
The employee looked down at him.
Then laughed.
The laughter quickly spread through the bakery.
Customers turned to stare.
The employee picked up the coins and tossed them back onto the counter.
"Do you really think that's enough for anything in here?"
Mateo lowered his eyes.
His cheeks burned with humiliation.
The entire bakery watched.
No one helped.
No one spoke.
