. CHAPTER 2 — The File Celeste Tried to Hide

Daniel took the clipboard slowly, as if one wrong move might make the truth disappear. The first page was a medical record from St. Agnes Hospital. The second was a birth certificate. The third was a sealed letter marked with his full name: Daniel Hart.

Ava watched him with wide, frightened eyes. She did not understand wealth, contracts, family names, or empire mergers. She only knew that her mother had cried for three nights before deciding to come. She knew the princess dress had been kept in a shoebox under the bed, wrapped in old tissue paper, and that her mother touched it only when she thought no one was watching.

Daniel read the birth certificate.

Father: Daniel Michael Hart.

His hand tightened around the paper. “Why did you never tell me?”

Lena flinched, not from his voice, but from the pain behind it. “I tried. Your family blocked every letter. Your number changed. Your assistant said you wanted nothing to do with me.”

“My assistant?”

Celeste’s mother, Marjorie Vale, stepped forward with a glassy smile. “This is not the time for a performance.”

Lena looked at Marjorie, and the bruise on her cheek seemed to darken under the chandeliers. “You know exactly what time it is.”

The air sharpened.

Celeste’s smile vanished. “Security.”

Daniel raised one hand. “Nobody touches them.”

For the first time that evening, the groom sounded like the man whose signature moved markets.

Ava pressed her face into Lena’s shoulder. “Mom, I’m scared.”

Daniel softened at the sound. He crouched carefully, making himself less tall, less frightening. “Ava. Is that your name?”

The girl nodded.

“That dress,” Daniel whispered, “where did you get it?”

Ava held it out. “Mommy said it was from a man who promised he’d come back.”

Lena closed her eyes.

Celeste laughed once, sharp and ugly. “A sentimental dress proves nothing.”

Daniel turned the dress inside out. On the lining, beneath the initials, a second line of stitching appeared: For our little princess, if she ever comes.

His face went pale.

He remembered the night he gave Lena that dress before leaving for London, when neither of them knew she was pregnant. He remembered saying it as a joke. He remembered meaning it as a promise.

Then he saw something else.

A small brown stain near the ribbon. Not old wine. Not dirt.

Lena saw him looking and whispered, “That happened today. Someone shoved us outside.”

May you like

Daniel’s eyes lifted to Celeste.

And Celeste looked away.
