. CHAPTER 5 — The First Lie Falls

The party did not explode immediately. It froze.

That was the strange thing about powerful rooms. They did not panic like ordinary rooms. They recalculated. Guests looked at Gideon, then Preston, then Victoria, deciding which direction their loyalty should face before it became expensive.

Preston’s smile vanished. “Warrant team?”

Victoria gave a light laugh that fooled nobody. “Gideon, surely you’re not staging some theatrical arrest at an engagement party.”

“I’m not theatrical,” Gideon said. “I’m prepared.”

Claire swayed. Preston’s grip tightened again, and this time Gideon moved.

He crossed the space in three strides, fast enough that Preston stepped back by instinct. Gideon placed himself between Claire and the man she was supposed to marry. It was not dramatic. He did not shove. He did not shout. He simply became a wall.

“Touch her again,” Gideon said, “and your lawyer will need a lawyer.”

Preston’s face reddened. “She is my fiancée.”

“She is my daughter.”

The words hit Claire harder than the slap had.

She had not realized how badly she needed to hear them. My daughter. Not Preston’s future wife. Not Victoria’s charity project. Not the grateful orphan they had polished for photographs. Gideon’s daughter.

The front doors opened a second time.

This time, two detectives entered with uniformed officers behind them. The music died. A waiter dropped a silver tray, and the sound cracked across the marble like a gunshot, though no one was hurt. Victoria slowly set her champagne down.

Detective Marla Harris, compact, unsmiling, and impossible to impress, walked directly to Gideon. “We’re in position.”

“Start with the upstairs office,” Gideon said. “Server room behind the wine cellar. Laptops, ledgers, security drives. Nobody leaves.”

Preston laughed too loudly. “This is insane. You’re abusing your office because your daughter is dramatic.”

Gideon looked at Claire. “Tell Detective Harris what happened this morning.”

Claire’s lips parted. No sound came.

Preston leaned around Gideon. “Careful, Claire. False statements are serious.”

The room heard the threat.

Gideon heard the threat.

But before he could speak, another voice rose from the service hallway.

“False statements?” Maria said.

She stepped into view wearing her black housekeeper uniform, face pale but steady, holding a tablet in both hands.

“I have the video,” she said.

And for the first time all night, Preston looked afraid.
