. CHAPTER 7 — The Woman in Red

Victoria Blackwood did not become rich by surrendering gracefully.

While the officers searched upstairs and Preston raged against legal reality, she recovered the only weapon she trusted: performance. She lifted her chin, smoothed her red satin gown, and addressed the guests as if they were shareholders at a crisis meeting.

“My son made a mistake,” she said. “A private, regrettable mistake. We will handle it as a family.”

Gideon almost smiled. “No, Mrs. Blackwood. You will handle dessert as a family. Assault and financial crimes belong to the state.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed. “You have no idea who you’re threatening.”

“Correct,” Gideon said. “I’m past threats.”

Detective Harris returned from the upstairs office carrying an evidence bag. Inside were ledgers, a laptop, and a small black drive labeled with the initials PV. Preston Vale? No. Paloma Ventures. Paloma Holdings. All roads leading to the same stolen money.

Claire stared at the drive. “My nonprofit account?”

Harris nodded. “And at least five others. Foster shelters. Veterans’ housing. Medical grants.”

The room changed again. Guests who had tolerated violence as a scandal now heard the sweeter music of self-preservation. Nobody wanted to be photographed beside stolen charity money.

Victoria saw it happening. Her empire had always depended on people staying bought. But panic made purchased loyalty look for receipts.

“You ungrateful little girl,” Victoria hissed at Claire. “We gave you a name.”

Gideon stepped forward. “She already had one.”

“I mean a real name.”

Claire lifted her head.

Something inside her, something long crushed beneath apology and fear, stood up straight. “Your name opens doors, Victoria. Mine taught me which doors to lock.”

A few guests looked down, embarrassed by the sudden poetry of courage. Maria smiled through tears.

Victoria raised her hand as if she might strike Claire herself. Before Gideon could move, Claire caught Victoria’s wrist.

Not hard. Just firmly.

“No,” Claire said.

One syllable. Years late. Perfectly timed.

Victoria stared at her as if a porcelain statue had developed teeth.

Claire released her wrist and looked toward Detective Harris. “There’s another drive. Preston keeps copies in the wine cellar safe behind the tasting cabinet. Code is his birthday backward.”

Preston stopped shouting.

Victoria turned white.

Gideon looked at his daughter with astonished pride.

Claire gave him a broken smile. “I told you I was busy.”
