. CHAPTER 5 — The Notebook in the Blue Box

Cassandra tried to recover quickly because recovery was what she did best. She laughed into the nearest camera, lifting her palms as if everyone else were confused children.

“Old paperwork means nothing,” she said. “Recipes overlap. Custard is custard. Almond is almond. I improved a common idea and built a business from it.”

Lily’s father pushed through the security line then. Daniel Hart had seen the live feed on a monitor in the hallway. By the time he reached the stage, his face was white with anger and fear. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around Lily’s shoulders, shielding her from the cameras as best he could.

“You touched my daughter,” he said to Cassandra, each word controlled.

Cassandra barely glanced at him. “Your daughter is being used to create a scene.”

Daniel reached into the canvas bag he carried everywhere since Elena’s death. His hands shook as he removed a small blue metal box, dented at the corners, sealed with a rubber band.

Lily looked up. “Dad?”

“I was saving it,” he whispered. “I didn’t know for what.”

He placed the box in Chef Bellamy’s hands. Inside lay Elena’s original recipe notebook, edges smoke-stained from the bakery fire. Daniel had found it years later in a storage crate returned by an old landlord. He had never used it for court because grief had made him tired, and Cassandra’s lawyers had made him afraid.

But tonight his daughter stood covered in cake because silence had become dangerous.

Bellamy opened the notebook under the stage lights. The camera zoomed in. Pages appeared on the big screen: Elena’s handwriting, ingredient ratios, sketches of cake layers, notes about temperature and timing. On one page, Lily’s baby footprint had been pressed in blue ink beside the words: Lily laughed when she tasted lemon. Keep the brightness.

A soft sound moved through the audience.

Then Bellamy turned to a page dated one week before the bakery fire. At the bottom, Elena had written: Cassandra asked to borrow my notes again. Said she only wanted to “study structure.” I said no.

Cassandra’s smile disappeared completely.

One of the sponsors stood. Another whispered to a lawyer. Phones turned toward Cassandra like a field of small, merciless lights.

Lily touched the page on the screen with her eyes. For the first time that night, tears slipped through the frosting on her cheek.

“She wrote about me,” she whispered.

Daniel hugged her tighter. “She wrote everything for you.”
