. CHAPTER 6 — The Assistant Who Could Not Stay Silent

The ballroom doors opened before Cassandra could speak again.
A woman in a black catering uniform stepped inside, breathing hard as if she had run up every staircase in the hotel. Her name was Nora Finch, Cassandra’s former assistant. Ten years earlier, Nora had signed nondisclosure agreements, carried secret boxes, deleted emails, and told herself that powerful people always left stains behind them.
Tonight she had watched Lily get hit with the cake on a staff monitor.
That was the moment guilt finally became heavier than fear.
Nora walked straight to the stage, holding a slim flash drive between two fingers. “I have the rest.”
Cassandra turned on her so sharply that several people stepped back. “You’re fired.”
“I quit six years ago,” Nora said. “You just kept owning my silence.”
Security moved toward Nora, but Chef Bellamy raised his hand. “Let her speak.”
Nora faced the audience. Her voice shook, but it did not break. “After the Morning Crust fire, Cassandra brought me a smoke-damaged notebook and paid me to type every page. She said the original baker was dead, then later said the woman had signed away rights. I believed what I wanted to believe because the job paid my rent.”
Daniel’s face went rigid. “You knew?”
“I knew enough to be ashamed.”
Nora handed the drive to the technician. The screen shifted again. Emails appeared. Scans. Early branding plans. A file titled GOLDEN CLOUD — REWRITE FROM ELENA NOTES. Another document showed Cassandra’s own comments: Remove name Sunlight. Change origin story. Never mention Hart.
The crowd’s whisper became a roar.
Cassandra backed away from the screen. “Those are fake.”
Nora looked at her sadly. “You made me keep backups in case staff betrayed you. I learned from the best.”
Lily did not understand all the legal words flashing on the screen, but she understood the way adults were suddenly looking at her differently. Not with pity now. With respect.
Cassandra grabbed the microphone from the podium. “Do you people realize what I built? Jobs. Restaurants. Scholarships. Television shows. You are all eating from my table.”
Chef Bellamy stepped close. “No, Cassandra. You made the table from Elena’s recipe and invited yourself to the head of it.”

For the first time, applause broke out. Not wild applause, but firm. Human. Final.
Cassandra looked around and realized she had lost the room.
