. CHAPTER 4 — Champagne on the Floor

Adrian reached for the document. Daniel placed one hand over it before he could tear it away.

“Do not destroy evidence in front of witnesses,” Daniel said.

It was not loud. It did not need to be.

Adrian turned red. “Evidence? You people are insane.”

“You signed three vendor approvals through Meridian Pacific Logistics,” Elena said. “That company exists only on paper. Its registered address is a mailbox in Nevada. The funds moved from there to a private account controlled by your personal attorney.”

Someone at the table gasped.

“That’s a liquidity strategy,” Adrian snapped.

“It is theft.”

Marissa’s eyes widened, but not from shock. From calculation. Elena saw it immediately—the mind of someone searching for the nearest exit from a sinking ship.

Adrian noticed too. He grabbed her wrist, not hard enough to hurt, but hard enough to remind her that they were still onstage together. “Don’t look at them. This is a setup.”

Marissa pulled her hand free. The first crack in his kingdom.

Elena’s gaze lowered to the champagne glass near Adrian’s elbow. Earlier, when he had mocked her, he had lifted it too carelessly. A splash had crossed the table and stained her white lapel. He had laughed. Marissa had laughed louder. Someone had whispered that Elena should go clean herself up before photographers arrived.

Elena had stayed.

Now the stain looked less like embarrassment and more like a marker. The exact moment arrogance had chosen its witness.

Daniel placed a second page down. “The emergency board consent has been executed by seventy-two percent of voting trustees.”

Adrian shook his head. “Impossible. I control the board.”

“You controlled their invitations,” Elena said. “Not their signatures.”

Thomas Reed stood slowly. His chair scraped against marble. “I signed.”

One by one, others lifted their hands or nodded. Not proudly. Some looked ashamed. Some looked terrified. But they had signed.

Adrian backed away from the table. His smile returned in broken pieces. “You think removing me helps you? Investors love me. Media loves me. The market responds to me.”

“The market responds to audited truth,” Elena said.

He laughed. “You are nothing without this company.”

Elena finally rose from her chair.

The room seemed to rise with her.

“I was this company,” she said. “Before you learned how to pronounce its name.”

May you like

No one laughed.

The champagne glass slipped from Adrian’s hand and shattered on the marble floor.
