. CHAPTER 5 — The Signature

For several seconds, the only sound in the ballroom was the settling of broken glass.
A waiter moved instinctively to clean it, but Elena lifted one hand. He stopped. She did not want the evidence of Adrian’s unraveling swept away too quickly. Some moments needed to remain visible long enough for people to understand them.
Daniel opened the final folder.
“This is the termination instrument,” he said.
Adrian’s mouth parted. “You can’t terminate me at a public event.”
“I can terminate you anywhere the authority exists,” Elena said. “You chose the public event.”
Marissa whispered, “Adrian, tell me this isn’t real.”
He spun on her. “Shut up.”
That one word did what the documents had not. Cameras along the wall tilted. Journalists lowered their glasses. Board members exchanged looks. The powerful could forgive fraud if it made them money. They were less forgiving of losing style in public.
Elena took the pen Daniel offered.
Adrian lunged forward half a step, then stopped when the man from the doorway moved closer. Behind him, two more legal officers entered, followed by a senior security director Elena had known for fifteen years. They did not touch Adrian. They did not need to.
“Wait,” Adrian said.
Elena paused with the pen above the page.
For the first time, his voice had lost its shine. “Elena. We can discuss terms.”
She looked at him with something almost like sadness. “We did. For eighteen months. Every warning was a term. Every audit request was a term. Every chance you had to tell the truth was a term.”
He swallowed.
“You ignored them because you thought silence meant surrender.”
The pen touched paper.
A single stroke.
Another.
Her signature was not dramatic. It was practiced, elegant, small enough to fit the line and large enough to end a reign.
Daniel turned the document toward the board. “Effective immediately, Adrian Cross is removed as Chief Executive Officer of Voss Meridian Holdings and all subsidiaries.”
The sentence seemed to empty the air from Adrian’s body.
Marissa took another step back.
Adrian looked around, searching for one loyal face. He found ambition, fear, curiosity, and relief. But not loyalty.
Elena capped the pen.

“Escort Mr. Cross from the room,” she said.
And the billionaire CEO who had entered the ballroom like a king suddenly looked like a man who had misplaced the door.
