. CHAPTER 4 — The Bracelet in the Torn Bag

Valentina lowered her head and pulled a small canvas bag from under her shirt. It was patched with mismatched thread, the kind of bag a child carried when everything she owned had to fit inside it. With clumsy fingers, she opened a torn seam in the lining.

A tiny silver hospital bracelet slid into her palm.

It was dull with age, but the engraved plate still caught the chandelier light.

V.V. — St. Agnes — 06/14

Below that, almost too small to see, were three initials Isabella recognized instantly.

I.E.V.

Isabella Evelyn Vaughn.

Her knees weakened.

Nine years ago, after hours of labor and grief and confusion, she had heard a baby cry once. One thin, furious cry. Then a nurse had leaned over her and pressed a mask to her face. When she woke, Celeste was sitting beside the bed in pearls, telling her, "She didn't make it, darling. Don't ask to see her. It will only break you more."

Isabella had believed her because she had been too young and too drugged and too devastated not to.

Now the proof lay in a dirty child's hand.

Graham moved again, this time less graceful. "That could be stolen. Anyone can engrave a bracelet. Isabella, think about the foundation. Think about tomorrow's headlines."

"I am thinking about a headline," Isabella said without looking at him. "Heiress discovers her mother trafficked her child into hiding."

Celeste's face hardened. "Careful."

The word had controlled Isabella for most of her life. Careful with your grief. Careful with your love. Careful with your reputation. Careful, or you will lose everything.

But everything had already been stolen.

Valentina's lip trembled. "Are you mad at me?"

The question shattered whatever strength Isabella had left. She dropped to her knees in the middle of the marble ballroom, careless of the crystals on her gown, careless of the cameras, careless of the hundreds of eyes watching.

"No," she said, and her voice broke. "No, baby. I am not mad at you."

Valentina stared at her. "Mama Maria said you might not want me."

Isabella closed her eyes against the pain.

"Mama Maria was wrong about that one thing."

She reached out, slow enough not to frighten the child. Her hand hovered near Valentina's cheek.

"May I?"

Valentina nodded.

When Isabella touched her face, the girl leaned into her palm like she had been waiting all her life for that warmth.

May you like

Behind them, Celeste turned toward the exit.

She did not get far.
