. CHAPTER 5 — The Attorney at Table Twelve

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped away from Table Twelve before Celeste could reach the side door. He was older, with silver at his temples and the steady expression of someone accustomed to courtrooms rather than galas.

"Mrs. Vaughn," he said, "I would not leave."

Celeste froze.

Isabella looked up. "Daniel?"

Daniel Price had been her father's attorney for twenty-five years. After her father's death, Celeste had dismissed him and replaced him with lawyers loyal to the new family board. Isabella had assumed he had come tonight as a courtesy, another familiar face among donors.

Daniel held up a sealed envelope.

"Maria Santos contacted my office six months ago," he said. "She sent documents, sworn statements, and copies of the original St. Agnes files. I advised her to come forward immediately, but she was terrified. When she became too ill to travel, she asked me to attend tonight in case the child made it here."

Graham's face drained of color.

Isabella slowly stood, keeping one hand on Valentina's shoulder.

"You knew?" she asked Daniel.

"I suspected enough to investigate," he replied. "I did not know whether the child would reach you safely."

Valentina whispered, "Mr. Price gave Mama Maria the address. He said there would be guards and cameras, so no one could make me disappear again."

Celeste snapped, "This is outrageous. That woman was unstable. The child is being used."

Daniel's expression did not change. "Then you will welcome a DNA test and the release of the clinic records."

No one in the ballroom breathed.

Celeste said nothing.

Graham recovered enough to step beside Isabella. "Bella, this is a family matter. Let me get you out of here before reporters twist it."

Daniel turned his gaze on him. "Mr. Hale, your name appears in recent payments to a private investigator who searched for Maria Santos. Would you like to explain why you were looking for the nurse before tonight?"

Isabella slowly turned.

Graham's jaw tightened.

"I was protecting you," he said.

"From my daughter?"

"From a scandal that could destroy everything you built."

Valentina clutched Isabella's dress.

That small fist in the expensive fabric answered the question before Isabella spoke. What had she built, if it required a child to be thrown back into the street?

Isabella removed Graham's hand from her arm.

"Security," she said.

The guards straightened.

Graham smirked, thinking she meant the child.

May you like

Isabella pointed at him.

"Escort Mr. Hale and Mrs. Vaughn to the private conference room. Do not let either of them leave until the police arrive."
