CHAPTER 12: The Nurse from St. Agnes

Nurse Evelyn Carter arrived wearing blue scrubs under a raincoat, her hair pinned badly, her face pale with fear and determination.
She looked like someone who had spent years avoiding a locked door and had finally decided to break it open.
Marcus met her in the private conference room. Elias stood when she entered, recognition flickering across his face.
“You were there,” he said.
Evelyn nodded, eyes filling. “I was twenty-six. Night shift. I should have spoken sooner.”
Adrian immediately said, “Anything she claims after six years is unreliable.”
Evelyn looked at him. “I remember you.”
The room went silent.
She placed a folder on the table. “I kept copies. Not because I was brave. Because I was scared.”
Inside were old intake forms, photographs of Claire’s hospital bracelet, transfer logs, and a handwritten note Evelyn had hidden before records were altered. Claire had been admitted under her real name. She had delivered a healthy baby boy. Two days later, a private physician signed a transfer order. The baby’s record vanished from the hospital system within the week.
Mara flipped through the pages carefully. “Who authorized the transfer?”
Evelyn pointed.
Adrian Ashford.
Victoria made a small sound.
Adrian’s face became hard. “I was acting under the authority of the family.”
Marcus looked up. “My authority?”
“You were overseas. Your father was ill. Claire was unstable.”
Evelyn’s voice shook. “She was not unstable. She was terrified. She kept asking for Marcus.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Evelyn continued. “She said not to let Mr. Ashford near the baby. She said he wanted the amended will.”
Mara’s pen stopped. “What amended will?”
Evelyn looked confused. “The one naming the child. Claire said her father changed it after learning she had a son. She said the baby inherited her voting shares if anything happened to her.”
Adrian stood too fast, knocking his chair backward.
That was the moment everyone understood.
This had never only been about a hidden child.
It was about control.
Noah was not just Claire’s son. He was the missing heir whose existence would have changed ownership of the Vale hotel empire.
Marcus stared at Adrian, his voice quiet enough to frighten everyone in the room.
“You erased my nephew for stock.”
May you like
Adrian said nothing.
Outside the windows, rain struck the glass like thousands of tiny fists.
