CHAPTER 17: The Safe Behind the Painting

Adrian’s townhouse contained a safe behind a painting of a stormy sea.

The warrant was executed three days after the lobby incident. By then, Adrian had stopped giving statements. Victoria had moved into a separate hotel under another name, though reporters found her anyway. The Ashford social circle, once loyal and glittering, vanished from public view like cockroaches under sudden light.

Inside the safe, investigators found passports, offshore account records, and copies of medical invoices paid to a private clinic that had closed five years earlier.

They also found letters from Claire.

Not sent letters. Stolen ones.

Marcus stood beside Mara when the evidence log arrived. He was not allowed to touch the originals, so he read the scanned copies on a tablet with hands clenched around the edges.

Marcus, they are telling everyone I am unstable. I am not. I am tired and frightened, but I know what I signed. If anything happens, find my son.

Another letter:

Adrian says you will never believe me. I think he is wrong. Please be wrong with me.

And the last:

Noah laughed today. I wanted you to hear it. I wanted someone good from our family to hear it.

Marcus had to sit down.

For six years, Adrian had not only hidden the boy. He had stolen Claire’s attempts to reach her brother and locked them behind a painting.

Elias found Marcus later on the balcony, staring across the city.

“She tried,” Marcus said.

Elias nodded. “A mother like that would.”

“I thought she left me no explanation.”

“Maybe now you know she left you everything she could.”

Marcus pressed his thumb against his eyes. “How do I tell Noah?”

“With love,” Elias said. “And not all at once.”

That evening, Marcus showed Noah one letter. The one about his laugh.

Noah read it slowly, sounding out the longer words. When he reached the sentence I wanted someone good from our family to hear it, he looked up.

“Are you the good someone?”

Marcus could not answer.

Elias did.

“He’s trying to be.”

Noah considered that, then leaned against Marcus’s side.

It was not forgiveness. Not yet.

But it was trust beginning in the smallest possible way.
