. CHAPTER 1 — The Fall Beneath the Chandeliers

The chandeliered hallway of the Ashford Charity Gala was built to make people look smaller than their money. Marble stretched from wall to wall like frozen milk. Crystal lights floated above the guests. Champagne glasses chimed softly. Every famous donor, judge, senator, and board member in the city had come to smile for cameras and pretend kindness was the same thing as generosity.

Clara Ashford had learned to hate rooms like that.

She stood near the entrance in a deep burgundy velvet dress, one hand wrapped around the wrist of her seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Lily wore a white satin dress with a bow tied at her back. It had been a gift from Clara’s father—one of the few things he had given without letting her mother correct him first.

“Stay close,” Clara whispered.

Lily nodded, but her eyes were fixed on the display table at the center of the hall. A small gold-framed photograph sat beside a donation box. It showed Clara as a child, standing beside her older brother, Adrian. He was smiling like a prince. Clara was slightly behind him, half out of frame.

That was how the Ashfords had always arranged the world.

Adrian first. Adrian bright. Adrian protected.

Clara only useful when silence was required.

Across the room, Adrian Ashford moved through the crowd in a tuxedo, accepting admiration as if it were air. He was handsome in the polished, expensive way dangerous men could be handsome. His parents followed behind him, smiling proudly, as though he had not spent thirty years leaving messes for others to clean.

Lily tugged on Clara’s sleeve. “Mommy, can I see the picture?”

Clara hesitated. “Just from here.”

But a waiter passed too close. A guest stepped backward. Lily slipped free for one second.

One second was enough.

A sharp crack echoed across the marble. The gold frame hit the floor. Lily stumbled, fell forward, and struck her forehead against the edge of the display platform.

The room gasped.

Clara moved before sound returned to the world. She dropped to her knees, pulling Lily into her arms. A thin line of blood ran down the child’s temple, bright against her pale hair.

Then Adrian’s voice cut through the silence.

“Get that brat away from my mother’s memorial table.”

May you like

Clara lifted her eyes.

Her brother was pointing at Lily as if the bleeding child were an insect on his shoe.
