. CHAPTER 8 — The Gala Watches

Clara did not plan to show the footage to the gala. She only wanted a copy before it disappeared. But truth, once cornered for too long, does not leave quietly.

A scream came from the ballroom.

Then another voice: “It’s on the screens.”

Daniel looked at the monitor wall. His face drained of color. “The gala AV system is linked to the control feed.”

In the chaos of the attempted deletion, the backup playback had been routed to the main projectors.

Clara ran to the hallway with Lily in her arms.

The ballroom had gone silent beneath three giant screens meant for donor slides. Instead, every guest was watching Adrian shove a little girl.

The footage looped.

There was no music now. No polite laughter. Only the image of a child falling beneath crystal chandeliers while the city’s most admired family stood exposed in high definition.

Adrian burst into the ballroom shouting for the screens to be cut. His voice cracked. “Turn it off!”

Nobody moved fast enough.

Guests stared at him with the horror of people realizing they had applauded a monster because he wore an expensive suit. Phones rose. Whispered names traveled faster than fire.

Victoria stepped onto the ballroom floor, face white, trying to reclaim command. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a private family matter.”

A woman near the front said, “He hurt a child.”

Another guest added, “And you tried to erase it.”

The words spread through the crowd.

Charles walked in behind them, older than he had looked twenty minutes ago. He took the microphone from the podium. His hand trembled so badly the metal tapped against his ring.

For a moment, Clara thought he would lie again.

Then he looked at Lily.

“My family will cooperate fully with any investigation,” he said, voice breaking. “The Ashford Foundation will preserve all footage. Adrian Ashford is removed from all executive authority effective immediately.”

The room erupted.

Adrian’s face twisted. “You can’t do that.”

Charles turned toward him. “I should have done it a long time ago.”

Victoria grabbed Charles’s sleeve. “Don’t destroy him.”

May you like

Charles looked at her, and in his eyes Clara saw the ruins of thirty years.

“We already did,” he said. “By saving him from everything.”
