. CHAPTER 5 — The First Clip

The security room smelled of dust, electricity, and secrets.
Monitors covered one wall, each showing a different corner of Whitmore House: the ballroom, the east terrace, the staircases, the service corridor, the private dining room where Arthur made deals no minutes ever recorded. Nora stood before the screens with her hands clenched at her sides while the technician trembled through the archive system.
Arthur entered behind her. Sebastian came next, then Evelyn, then half a dozen guests who had followed despite being told not to. The doctor stayed close to Lily, who sat wrapped in Nora’s velvet shawl.
“Play the ballroom feed,” Nora said.
“Nora,” Evelyn warned.
“Play it.”
The technician clicked.
On the center monitor, the gala rewound into silence. Guests moved backward. Lily rose from the floor in reverse. Sebastian’s hand returned to his side. Then the clip moved forward again at normal speed.
There it was.
Lily standing still.
Sebastian stepping in.
His hand striking her shoulder.
Her small body turning, falling, hitting marble.
No trip. No running. No confusion.
A sound left the room—not a gasp exactly, but the collective loss of a lie.
Sebastian lunged toward the console. “Turn it off.”
Nora stepped between him and the keyboard. He stopped just short of her, breathing hard, his eyes wild.
“You pushed a child,” she said.
“She shouldn’t have been here,” he snapped.
The words did more damage than any denial could have. Behind him, donors shifted away. The doctor’s mouth tightened. A trustee who had once praised Sebastian’s leadership stared as if seeing him clearly for the first time.
Arthur recovered enough to say, “This is an internal family matter.”
“No,” Nora replied. “This is assault.”
Evelyn’s eyes flashed. “Be careful.”
But Nora had already seen the technician’s face. Pale. Hesitant. Terrified.
“There’s more,” he whispered.
Arthur turned on him. “No.”
The technician’s hand hovered over the mouse. “The child’s mother filed a request years ago. She asked that certain dates be preserved. Mr. Whitmore ordered them deleted, but the backup system—”
“Stop talking,” Arthur said.
Nora felt her heart pound.
Lily looked up through tears. “My mom?”
May you like
The technician clicked another folder.
And the first clip was only the beginning.
