. CHAPTER 7 — The Golden Son Breaks

Sebastian had spent his life being rescued before consequences could touch him. He did not know how to stand in a room where everyone had stopped believing.
His anger moved through him like panic wearing a mask. He turned on Nora. “You planned this.”
Nora rose slowly, keeping Lily behind her. “I planned a charity gala. You planned a lifetime of cruelty.”
“You always hated me.”
“I was taught to protect you.”
“Then do it now.”
The plea slipped out before he could sharpen it into a command. For one second, the golden son looked like the boy Nora remembered: spoiled, frightened, and certain someone would rearrange reality for him.
Evelyn tried. “Sebastian, don’t say another word.”
But he was beyond listening. “That woman trapped me,” he spat, meaning Claire. “She wanted money. They always want money.”
Lily flinched.
Nora’s hand flew to the child’s shoulder. “Do not speak about her mother like that.”
Sebastian laughed, ugly and desperate. “Her mother was staff.”
“And you thought that made her disposable?”
“She was nothing.”
The room heard it. The donors, the board members, the doctor, the staff clustered by the door—everyone heard what the Whitmores had hidden beneath polished manners.
Arthur stepped forward. “Sebastian. Stop.”
But Sebastian’s eyes had locked on Lily. “You are not a Whitmore,” he said. “You are a mistake.”
Nora moved before anyone else did. She crossed the small space between them and slapped him hard enough that the sound cracked through the security room.
Silence followed.
Her hand stung. Her whole body trembled. She had never struck anyone in her life, but she did not regret it. Not when Lily was crying behind her. Not when Claire’s frightened voice still seemed to linger in the monitors.
Sebastian touched his cheek, stunned less by pain than by the impossible fact that Nora had acted without permission.
“You’ll pay for that,” he whispered.
“No,” Nora said. “I already paid. Claire paid. Lily paid. Every person you hurt paid while our parents called it family.”
Police sirens began to wail outside the mansion gates.
May you like
Evelyn’s perfect face finally cracked.
Arthur looked at the monitors as if they had betrayed him, when all they had done was remember.
