. CHAPTER 1 — The Girl Beneath the Chandeliers

The ballroom of the Hawthorne Grand Hotel had been built for people who never had to ask for anything. Gold light poured from three crystal chandeliers. Champagne glasses chimed softly. Men in tuxedos laughed with their hands in their pockets, and women in silk gowns turned their diamonds toward the camera crews positioned near the velvet ropes.

It was the annual Children of Tomorrow Charity Gala, where billionaires smiled beneath banners about kindness and wrote checks large enough to make strangers call them heroes.

Then the music stopped.

Not because the hired orchestra finished its song, but because a small figure had walked into the center of the marble floor.

She could not have been older than seven. Her hair was neatly parted but loose at the ends, as if someone had tried to make her presentable with only fingers and hope. Her cream-colored dress was worn thin at the sleeves and stained near the hem. Her feet were bare. Dust clung to her ankles. In both hands, she held nothing but the courage not to run.

For a moment, no one spoke.

The little girl looked at the buffet tables first. Her eyes followed the silver trays of roasted chicken, warm bread, fruit, and cakes. Her stomach tightened so sharply she had to press one hand against it. Then she turned toward the black grand piano beneath the largest chandelier.

A security guard stepped forward. “Sweetheart, you can’t be in here.”

The girl flinched but did not leave.

In a voice so small it barely crossed the marble, she whispered, “Can I play for food?”

A woman in a gold dress burst into laughter before the sentence had fully landed. Several guests joined her, relieved that someone had decided how they were supposed to react.

The girl’s face reddened. Her eyes shone, but no tear fell. She looked at the piano again, as if the instrument were the only person in the room who had not laughed.

Across the ballroom, a man in a black suit turned slowly.

Nathaniel Vale, owner of the Vale Foundation and the reason half the city’s wealth was gathered under that ceiling, had been speaking to a senator when the girl’s voice reached him. He did not hear the laughter. He heard only the question.

And something cold moved through his chest.
